Old Xbox 360 power supply making a whining noise

Hi everyone,

I recently came across two very old Xenon xbox 360s (16.5A, 12V) one was made in 05 and the other 06. I bought them because they were really cheap and one was said to have the "no display error/4 red lights" I figured maybe a new A/V cable would fix it.
When I got the proper power supply(used condition) the amount of dust buildup was insane, air flow in and out was very minimal and the vents were just full of it. I carefully used compressed air to move all the dust in the intake vent towards the front of
it and then pulled it out. That vent is now very clean.

Unfortunately now after a little use it has began to develop a high pitched whining sound, not from the fan however. When the supply is plugged into the wall but not the console, no whining is present. When the supply is plugged into the console and the
wall but the console is not powered on a high pitched but very quiet sound begins to emit. When the console is powered on I can still hear the whine over the fan, the console still functions normally however.

I've completely unplugged the supply and let it sit for about 30 minutes to discharge and cool everything, this helped to slightly reduce the sound but it is still present

is the power supply a hazard/defective now? I've found more of its types on ebay so I can easily order a new one if this one is bad.

I was going to ask this in support but I don't believe Microsoft carries this type of supply anymore if this one does have an issue

The sound seems to be coming from the middle of it as I can hear it almost equally on both sides, it sounds like a really high pitched whistle

I also bought these consoles because I consider them historic as they are no longer made and were never opened, these consoles will simply be used as a backup if my primary ever goes out. They will not be "tricked" (I have
no interest or reason in doing that)

Check your power supply unit. Last time I got three red rings my power supply had died on me and I had to get another one. If it's making a whistling, whining noise then it's on its way out. Make sure it's free from dust aswell so that it's not over heating.

My 360 power supply is making excessive noise that's quite annoying. Is there a way to fix?

 

What you're getting is probably inductor coil whine/noise. When the power supply is plugged into an outlet and the 360 it sends a small amount of power to the console all the time. This is so it can wait for a controller to turn it on or charge devices connected
to it. Thing is most inductors are meant for when a power supply is supplying the max amount of current the power supply is meant to output. So in low power it can start to resonate and you get a high pitch noise.

Anyways about the only thing I can think of is find a replacement or fix it yourself since it should still be fine for use probably longer than the console will. Simplest methods for dampening an inductor coil is usually non-conductive epoxy. Hot glue or
a small piece of foam can also work if it doesn't heat up to much. If you do decide to try and fix it be really careful and give the unit plenty of time to discharge.

Could also just unplug the power supply or plug it into a surge protector you can turn off when it's not being used. You'll lose a couple features I mentioned, but won't hurt the console or power supply.
