Old Xbox 360 Elite can't connect to wireless networks w/adapter

I had an old elite that I had sent out for a red ring of death and I got it back but never used since I had bought a new 360 in the mean time. Now I'd like to give it as a gift but I wanted to update it with the newer dashboard (it still has the channel
layout) but when I plug the adapter in it just blinks green and can't find anything. I did the steps in the forum already to no avail, and also the adapter works on my other 360 just fine when hooked up in the exact same location. I have no idea where to go
from here but I know the kids will want to use it online, so I really do need a fix!!

I'm sorry that you're having trouble with your Xbox 360 wireless adapter. A flashing green light indicates that the adapter is attempting to connect to a wireless network. When you try to connect to your wireless network, does the console prompt you to connect
an Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter, or does it recognize the adapter but display no wireless networks in the list?

If I don't have the adapter plugged into the console, it can't find my wireless network. I just get a message saying "To use a wireless internet connection, connect an Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter to your console."
