    Old Hard Drive with New Xbox


    Hi, I took my old xbox 360 20gb hard drive and placed it into my xbox slim. I've called support (in Canada) and a manager named Roger told me I could use it as long as I didn't flash or go further than opening the case. I've installed my hard drive and people
    are saying i will be banned, but I have 13 friends that are using this type of method for their slims. They have been using it for 2 year now and no ban. Can someone clear this up? Thank you, Tom

    Ah, I see what you're getting at. If you connect the new hard drive to your old xbox using a transfer cable the new hard drive will be recognized only as flash memory with 16 gb of room.

    Why not just buy a 250 gb hard drive for the old system?

    Really, there's no way to adequately detect this kind of modification without false positives (faulty FATX tables and the like which aren't necessarily indicative of tampering), but that is a moot argument; you should keep in mind that you're bound to the
    Xbox Live ToU if you've been online with that console, ever. Modification of your console in ANY way is, without question, bannable. If you're going online with your console, please buy an overpriced hard drive and save yourself the $200 for a new console,
    and avoid a potential ban, enforcable or not.

    I did some research and I found a video where you can take off the old 1st generation hard drive and put it into the new xbox. So I went to my friend's house we took apart the case of the old hard drive and put the actual hard drive in his Xbox Slim and
    it worked! I'm planning to order the old 20 GB Hard drive since its more cheaper than the new hard drive.

    you can take the hard drive from one console to another no problem.

    There is only restriction to this... the only way you can use the hard drive from the old style XBOX 360 on the new "SLIM" 360 is the following:

    Using a USB transfer kit, you can plug the old style xbox hard drive into the new SLIM XBOX. You can then transfer stuff to the new XBOX. Note that in this setup, you can't use the old style hard drive for anything other than transferring stuff over.

    If both XBOX 360 are the old style, there is no problem, just pop the hard drive off one 360 and plug it into the other one.

    Note that disassembling the hard drive unit (to take the bare drive out) is not supported, and is a terms of use violation.

    Since both of you have helped me greatly, I come again to you asking for your sage advice.

    It looks I will definitely need a new Xbox. I have found some decently priced Xbox 360 consoles online, but they come decently priced because they all have 4 GB hard drives, which creates a problem because I have a 500 GB hard drive. I'm pretty sure the
    hard drive is not an issue with my old Xbox 360 (I took it out and attempted to power on the old Xbox 360 with the same results), so I definitely want to preserve the old hard drive memory. If I buy one of the Xbox 360 consoles with a 4 GB hard drive, do I
    then need to purchase another 500 GB hard drive to format to the new console, then transfer data from the old hard drive to the new hard drive?

    You won't be able to save files on it while in-game.



    When attached via an official transfer cable, the HDD shows up in System Settings, Memory as a Transfer Cable device. You can Copy or Move content to and from the Transfer Cable device just as you would other storage devices.



    The Transfer Cable device is not usable outside of System Settings, Memory, that I'm aware of.
