    Hello I have a 750 Gb hard drive from a old comp as far as I could tell the drive is empty but I used my usb adaptor and it will not show up as another media source, and I've tried this with at least one other hard drive no dice. any reason that I can not
    use an old hard drive as an external?

    Which Xbox One Should I Get- 500gb or 1tb

    I have the 500GB internal hard drive; mine is an older unit, with a 1 TB external hard drive for the games. For a media center, I have 2 networked 6 TB hard drives (that are not connected to the console directly) and have accessed the network drive to the
    console.

    The advantages of having an external drive is you are not limited to a specific size of drive. As long as it meets the USB3 port, it can be used as a game hard drive.

    Xbox issue

    I moved my games from the internal hard drive to the external hard drive to see if my games won't kick me to the dashboard I tried it yesterday with a external hard drive I had never used for my Xbox. My games were never on the external hard drive they
    were in the internal hard drive. Also I downloaded trove and it kicks me to the dashboard as well.

    Most external drives work provided they meet the minimum requirements. Some do not. First and foremost make sure your enclosure is USB 3.0, and also

    Please don't bump old threads. If a game requires a hard drive, only an official MS brand hard drive will work. If you're using an external for extra storage, it will not see that as an actual hard drive.

    If you are using this as an external storage (as the 500GB is not officially supported for the original fat 360 model), then the maximum allowed partition for any drive is 32GB. The cable is meant only for transferring files from an old hard drive to a new
    one, not for using as an external drive. External drive support on the 360 is limited to 2 devices of 32GB maximum on each device - any additional space on a hard drive or flash drive is wasted.
