The current system allows for 11 characters with reserved incase the name you want is taken and you get a generated hashtag

Only way yo get ah old gamertag is to create the account before the change

And not change since which falls under the new rules

Also, maybe the game you're trying to play supports the new gamertag system. Does it show on your game the new gamertag (new Gamertag system) or your previous old gamertag (old gamertag system)?

Yes, it's valid. Sorry for the confusion. I am actually referring to the new gamertag system itself. Please note that old gamertag system is still being used on older games or games that do not support the new gamertag system.

Try to check on https://social.xbox.com/ChangeGamerTag, if you try to change your gamertag there, there's an option to customize your old gamertag but that's for old system only. Since you're using the Series X for gaming, most of your games should support the new system and not the old system. Thus, it only shows you now the 12-character maxed gamertag and not the more than 12-character gamertag.

gamertag FAQ for more information. If you already have used the free one, and it asks for a fee. You would need to pay the fee.
