Offline Profile to Gamertag

I have an offline profile that I would like to join XBOX Live with, but everytime I try to join I get an error. I have read where I need to have an account without a gamertag, but when I try to create a Microsoft account without a gamertag it generates one
automatically for that account. How can I resolve this and use my offline profile as my gamertag on XBOX Live? I have a lot of acheivements, etc. that I would like to carry on to XBOX Live.

Whenever you create an account with Xbox Live nowadays, a gamertag is automatically generated for you, which can be changed once for free after the initial set-up process.

What exactly does the error say when you attempt to make the offline profile an online one? What steps are you taking to start the process?

 

First I Sign In with my profile. Then I go to settings and pick "Join Xbox Live". Then the Welcome to Xbox Live box comes up and says: Set up a Microsoft account for Xbox Live; Get your unique gamertag; Choose your membership level. Then it asks for my name;
email; & password. Then it says "Email or Password Not Valid" Can't sign in, the email address or password didn't work. Try a different one, or use your app password to sign in to: Just so you know I am not using a Microsoft email account(because any one of
those generates its own gamertag) I am using my road runner email account.

Actually, Visage, that's not true. You no longer need to use a hotmail/outlook account, unless they very recently changed it back and it is now required once again.

Back to the OP, If you have a gamerscore and/or achievements, that would mean you have some form of Microsoft account set up on the Xbox console, even if it's for an offline account. You would have to input the exact same information you used in the initial
set-up process during your conversion from an offline profile to an Xbox Live one. If it is asking you to use your app password, there's a possibility you have two-step verification turned on. For some reason, two-step verification doesn't play well with the
Xbox, and in the past it has completely stopped people from accessing their account on the Xbox until it is turned off. I would suggest going to login.live.com and signing into your microsoft account (Which does NOT have to be a Hotmail or Outlook account,
it can be any email) and checking to see if you have two-step verification turned on. If you do, turn it off.

If you do that and still can't upgrade your account to a Live profile, I would suggest perhaps calling Xbox Support at 1-800-469-9269 or 1-800-4MY-XBOX to see if they can tell you what's going on with your Microsoft account. If all else fails however, you
may simply have to make a new account altogether to play on Xbox Live, which would mean starting fresh.

Thanks for all your advice. I ended up chatting with someone from Microsoft Support and they helped me solve my issue. I ended up having to create a Microsoft account using my pc online instead of the Xbox so I wouldn't get an automatic gamertag, then I
could follow the same path I did above and it worked with my offline profile. I was able to keep the profile w/ acheivements and use my road runner account. Thanks again for the support.
