Offline gamertag: cannot signup for new Xbox Live account on Xbox360

I have an old gamertag on my Xbox360 HDD that I used with a past Xbox360, which I no longer own. I plug the HDD into my newer Xbox360, and it automatically signs me into this gamertag. I want to signup for Xbox Live, but it won't let me sign up for a new
account. I go into the Xbox Live sign up screen and press on the Sign Up button, and nothing happens. How do I sign this offline account up to a new Xbox Live account?

Question about Xbox 360 profile

A microsoft account can only be linked to one gamertag. So in order to signup your offline hard drive profile for xbox live, youd need to use a microsoft account that isnt already affiliated with an xbox profile.

 

WLID is associated to different gamertag

have had WLID/hotmail account several years.

have xbox-360 console for 1 year.

today joined xbox-live gold w/ 3M membership with redeem card online at website.

changed the system generated gamertag at signup to match console profile.

cannot get logged on to xbox-live on console. keep getting above message.

what to do?

 

What happens when you sign out of this account? You should be able to just press the guide button and then press x to sign out. Once signed out, you should be able to create your new account.

 

I was actually trying to create a new Xbox Live account using my old gamertag, since the old Xbox live account had been purged due to inactivity. I've since spoken to some Microsoft account reps, and they found that my old gamertag is somewhat of an anomaly
and are working to fix the problem.

I can still play all of my games associated with that gamertag on my Xbox360, but I can't play some of my PC games that use Games for Windows Live and the same gamertag. It's not a huge inconvenience, but it just stinks that my Live account got deleted
and the old gamertag won't allow me to create a new Live account using that tag.
