Office on Xbox One

Not a feature I would use. I am just here for the games. But my son is graduating early due to a new program they put in place. He was able to take college classes in HS this year as well with seniors. He has a laptop that I gave him and the students
were talking about computers for college. And my son brought up a point about the Xbox One. Wondering if it could run Office apps and other things like that. He said that basically every student was interested. They could use the console for all the basic
school needs while having a game system. And I could see MS doing this and benefiting from it. And that made me wonder:

How many people would buy the Xbox One because it not only played games but it could do basic computing stuff though apps?

Now, I am not advocating this. I understand the gaming focus desire, I do understand the pull and need for other features however. I am not even a user of these kinds of things and use my PC for that stuff. But I have to wonder how big of a selling point
this would be for many. Being able to do Word, PowerPoint, and the like with apps on the One. And having the basic internet functionality to search. Imagine these college students. They need a PC for research and basic Office programs. They use facebook,
twitter, etc. Nothing that could not be done on an Xbox One app. And they would not mind having a gaming console. With these programs and features MS now has a nice sized advantage with a sizable group of buyers. And those people may be enticed to buy
some games (I am sure many would).

Now, maybe something was mentioned that I missed. Maybe even and official announcement that these types of things were coming or not. And if so a link would be cool if you want to provide one (I did a quick search and found nothing recent on these things). Also,
you personally might no be interested. But I would not mind knowing not only your opinion on these types of apps but also how you see this benefiting MS one way or the other. And do you think they are going to go this route (if nothing has been announced
yet).

There are no versions of Microsoft office available on Xbox One however there are Office versions available on tablets if that helps.

My mother owns an Xbox One and uses it for the Kinect TV functionality and apps. If there were a few more PC related apps, she would close the lap top.

 

You mention mother and that was something I never thought about either. My mothers PC is dying and she is going to need one in the near future since it is not really fixable at this point. With those features even she could use an Xbox One. She is not
a core gamer in the least. But there are plenty of games she could play that she would like. And she would have all here social apps handy. And Live would give here an easy way to connect to family and friends that are on their. My sisters and plenty of
other family already use Live for those things from the 360.

Not only would getting her the One be great for those types of features but the Kinect voice commands would really help her a lot. Hmmm.

 

My mother doesn't game much either. She would love a new Tetris or Galaga type game. But all of the social apps she loves. Since she is out of state, she always uses Skype on Xbox One. And it is her primary Blu Ray player as well as entertainment hub.

So it is something to consider

If I called out sick from work to play Batman: Arkham Knight (It's like I can see into the future) and someone at worked called for some info.

I would find great value in just snapping to One Drive and opening an Excel file to look something up and make edits if I had to. Then I could get back to what really matters... Saving the good citizens of Gotham City.

 

I could see that being useful Bird. I have my consoles hooked up where my computer is. Just run my consoles though one of the monitors and can always see PC stuff. But I imagine that for most it would be super useful. Especially for people that play
from the couch. The situation you mention is a great example.

 

Why not search the Feedback site in my signature and see if the idea already exists, and vote it up. If it doesn't exist, create a new idea. I'd use it all the time, and speaking of Moms, mine would use it too.

they just need to add Outlook and then you can use office and word online.

 

Just use the Internet Explorer app to go to
http://OneDrive.com and use the online version of Office available there. You have Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote.

I believe you can print too if you have a wireless printer on your network, not having one though I can't confirm that works.

You can use a USB keyboard to type with and the controller in place of a mouse. Not an ideal set-up but for basic office work it'd do.

 

god no. I'm old school. I like a console for playing games only and maybe Netflix. Everything else can just go away for all I care.

 

Oh, I would not use it BizarroMantis (or at least do not see a scenario I would ever need too but one never knows). I just see this as something MS could do and add appeal to their console for some. I personally do not even care about Netflix or anything
like that. I watch absolutely no T.V. After I convinced my wife to cancel after showing her how little she actually watched the majority of her T.V. show viewing comes from my Amazon Prime membership and Hulu+. And even those get very little use. I has
been at least 7 years since we last had t.v. service.

 

My initial reaction was to bristle at the thought (I like to relegate work to my PC and play to my console), but it would provide good value to several Xbox customers. I've known of a couple gaming communities who keep their tournament data on Google Docs,
so why not Office.

And Vaynel is right. It's available right now through the method he outlines. I was going to try printing last night to see if that was possible from the One but got sidetracked by Wolfenstein.

 

I've had zero luck printing from Office 365 via the console.
