Odd issue

So, I went recently to see about checking the multiplayer in Halo: MCC, incase Microsoft had awarded my free month of XBL Gold. However, it says that multiplayer is disallowed. I went into settings to see what might be the issue. Lo and behold, it was set
to allow me to join multiplayer games. I've never activated the family setting, and I don't know why I'm still getting that message other than it's the fact that I lack Gold. Another odd thing is when I went to check my multiplayer connection, it tested fine.
So just to clean out any potential bugs I re-logged into my wireless network, and it re-connected as "Strict" but said underneath that all features were allowed (or something along those lines) were previously my connection had been "Open."

What's going on?

You need an active Gold subscription to play online.

 

I know that. The thing is, the message is weird. It should just tell me that I don't have the proper privileges. This sounds like something that might persist even if I had Gold.

 

You are getting that message only because you are silver, it will go away once you buy gold.
