    Obnoxiously noisy power supply


    Recently, my 360's power supply has been making loud grinding noises at random times. It hasn't failed as of yet, but I want to know if this is an issue I should be concerned with. The grinding noise usually only lasts for a couple of minutes at a time.
    I imagine that it has something to do with the fan and I'd like to know if this means I need to replace it or if it is just a simple annoyance.

    Hi,

    Besides turning the instant-on feature off, is there a way for the power supply to ever go quiet?

    The noise it generates is a constant hum; whether the console is on or off.

    The system is a day-one edition, and the problem has existed since day-one on my system, which I have owned since release.

    The power supply is very well ventilated. It is sitting on top of the TV stand, there are no obstructions to air flow, and the room temperature is between 60-73F

    Regarding dust, as I mentioned above, it has been the same noise since day 1; and the whole system is very clean and dust-free.

    Now I do not believe it's any louder than any system out there. It's just noisy.

    It is probably the fan running high to keep the XBox from overheating. Ensure it is in a well ventilated area with no heat source near it. Check that the vents are clear of dust. If it continues to be noisy you could try using a cooling fan. You can
    actually get some that plug into a USB port.

    Would this have anything to do with me running it at 1080i through the in-box component cables? I've heard that could cause some hiccups.

    Where is the power supply? Is there sufficient ventilation for it? Is it dusty? Please check this to make sure that it is not laboring to get air.

    probably just the power supply being noisy when no power draw. nothing you can do apart from unplug it or get a new power supply (if external) or another monitor.
