Notification centre has a poor user experience when using Kinect/voice commands

Since the major UI update, it's become nearly impossible to respond to a notification using voice commands, as the meaningful text is replaced with "Item 1", "Item 2", etc.

Responding to a notification, for example a Skype call, bring up the notification button and a prompt to respond with the voice command "Open That" or by pressing the home button.

If the user responds with the home button, the notification centre opens and all the possible options are visible and, in short, it works.

However, if the user responds with the voice command, the notification centre opens with voice "select" controls activated. When voice controls are active, the notification centre hides all the possible options behind "Item 1", "Item 2", etc. The user can't
see what "Item 1", etc actually does because the meaningful words are all hidden underneath the mess of green overlay.

I've particularly noticed this problem with Skype notifications. Since Skype is a first party app, owned by Microsoft, I would assume the notification centre would have the voice commands already programmed.

    :)

    Does Kinect learn?

I've had my xbox one since Christmas now and I absolutely love it. For us in my house hold it has become the centre of our media centre

Kinect has been great to although it has not been responding to voice commands 100% of the time. Does Kinect learn your speech patterns or does it rely on software updates for performance improvements?

Anyone else got kinect issues today?

hi folks. Seem to be having kinect issues today. Turned the one on the usual way using voice commands then once the console was on it just stopped working. Kinect is on, can see me but won't accept any voice commands.

Also, there are 2 notifications and when I select the notification icon the console just hangs and does nothing. Eventually goes to screen i recently accessed.

I have tried 'car hear me' but this has not helped.

    Any ideas?

    Turning off voice commands completely

Voice commands will only work if you have a kinect or a headset. Cortana has to be turned on first before you use her voice commands, and if you do not have a kinect, then the Xbox voice commands will not be turned on.

    Cortana

It's the region you want to change, but I personally wouldn't advise it. Billing and other issues arise... Nobody listens to me though. :)

WP8.1 is a great update. I've been on it for a week today.

Live tiles means we don't need a notification centre! Grouping tiles together at the top of the home screen and setting up notifications on the lock screen gives me precisely the same notification the IPhone gave me.
This. Or, at least, I used to think this.

Yes, Live Tiles are awesome and I would not give them up, but the Notification Centre compliments them so well. A central place for all notifications and so easy to check incoming notifications that you missed, where the apps don't necessarily show a tile
notifications (Smartglass/Games Hub, for instance, regarding Live messages).

As for Cortana, it would be cool to see that integrated with Kinect's voice commands.

And Viral, it will reply with Chief. If you're in the US. Else we just have to wait. :(

Will/Should Xbox Kinectless come with voice commands?

If Microsoft allows users to use voice commands without a Kinect then that's it for the Kinect, it's basically dead. The main selling point of the Kinect is voice commands.

I have an Xbox One and I have my Kinect plugged in. I use the Kinect whenever my Xbox One is turned on because for the most part it's quicker and easier navigating the UI with my voice.

    Why are you rejecting kinect
I am wondering why people are rejecting kinect, aside from live tv and aside from turning on/off your xbox; voice commands enrich gaming experience it has limitless power for interaction: 1- calling an airstrike just by a voice command
Which when you sneeze Kinect mistakes for the command and wastes that airstrike, how nice. Can't I just press a button to do that, I'm holding the controller already I'm not so lazy I can't move a finger
2- new experience for rpg games where you can interact by voice
Which aren't advanced enough to truly react to your voice yet and as such it will look for specific phrases and you'll still be forced into a dialogue tree system anyway.
3- speaking during a sneaky mission will compromise your position.
Which if a loud bit of traffic goes by will be really annoying as you don't control that.
I believe the same game on ps4 and xbox one will have much richer experience on xbox one if voice commands are integrated.
I do not see how when we have had headsets with microphones for a long while that we need a second microphone in the form of Kinect to work voice recognition. Games have dine it this generation already without Kinect. Most recently Binary Domain did it,

    Voice commands with external mic?

Nope, the voice command system requires the Kinect. The reason being that the Kinect has a load of fancy gizmos that do noise cancellation etc.

Basically if you want to use the voice commands, get the Kinect bundle, you won't regret it.
