please check account.microsoft.com to check if the payment was succesful for that gift on your account.

If it was then have the friend double check his junk/spam folders. and double check if they are checking the correct account. They should be able to see the email address(es) they might need to check at account.microsoft.com

If no email is there, then it's best to contact Xbox Support to see what options they can offer to solve the issue

If it does, then just give it some more time. It could take upto 24 hours to get the items sometimes. If the purchase doesn't show on the link, then not to worry, it means the transaction failed and the money will be refunded back to your account automatically within 24 hours. You don't have to do anything else.
