not receiving my free upgrade to minecraft better together from minecraft xbox one edition

Thank you for coming to the Xbox forums. Unfortunately the free Better Together upgrade for owners of Minecraft Xbox One edition has passed. The deadline was January 30th, 2018. Here is a quote from

Mojang's Better Together Update FAQ for Xbox console users:

"Q: I own Minecraft: Xbox One Edition on disc. Will I be able to get the Better Together Update for free?

A: If you own Minecraft: Xbox One Edition on disc and have played for at least 5 hours in the past 12 months or bought DLC, you’ll be able to upgrade to Minecraft for free, until January 30th 2018. If you haven’t played in the past 12 months, you can play
five hours or purchase DLC before January 30th 2018 to unlock your upgrade."

Apologies but any updates your son's friends received were probably just a general update for the game and they already had the free upgrade or they had purchased the upgrade.

Thank you for posting on Xbox Forums! In regards to the Minecraft Xbox One Edition, it is a version of Minecraft that is no longer supported since the debut of Minecraft Better Together Edition. Back when the new Edition of Minecraft debuted, we did
have a promotion for owners of the Xbox One edition of Minecraft to upgrade to the Better Together edition for free. However, that promotion has since ended. At this point and time if you would like to upgrade to the

Better Together Edition, you will have to purchase it through the Xbox or Microsoft store.

Hi, if you have the Minecraft Xbox One disc version then sadly that offer of a free upgrade to the Better together version no longer applies and you will need to buy Minecraft again.

It seems that the window has been missed, but the following information is also provided:

Q: What is going to happen to the old console edition?

A: The old console edition will not be available for new purchases after the full release of Minecraft on Xbox One and Switch. Existing owners will still be able to access and play the old console version
and minigames, but those versions will not receive updates after the official release of Minecraft.
