Yep, apparently I was continue on up past the room with 3 basilisks. I never went in that room cuz I was tired of dying so I would run onto the platform and jump to the next branch.

After watching a youtube vid I realized that was the way out.

1. You have to go past the basilisks and go up the ramp in the cave they are in to get out.

2. Switch to the best armor you have against curse, if you already have the dingy set that's great against curse, otherwise that red sorcerer armor is decent.

I got lucky. I didn't hit any bonfires since the swamp in Blighttown, made it to the Dragon covenant and used Homeward bone. I didn't have warp and I knew it was far.
