Not being able to refund a game gift.

Before we proceed any further, we would like to set your proper expectation that refund for digital game is solely handled by our online refund team where you can use the online form to request a refund. Be aware that submitting a request doesn’t guarantee a refund, especially if it doesn’t meet the criteria below:

Refunds are typically issued for requests meeting the following criteria:

• Requests are made within 14 days of the purchase date
  
• Requests are for games in which you haven’t accumulated a significant amount of play time. Microsoft's refund policy states that digital game purchases are eligible for a refund within 14 days of purchase, as long as the game has not been played for more than 2 hours. However, if the game has been played for more than 2 hours, it is not eligible for a refund.
  

If you believe that your request was denied in error, you can submit a ticket again or reply to the email that was send to you. They may be able to review your case and provide additional options for resolving the issue.

the funny thing is, i gifted him a game a while ago, he redeemed it, played it for like 3 days, then deleted it and i was able to refund it. so it makes no sense that i was able to refund a gifted game back then but can’t do it now.

Thanks for reaching out to the forums. We see you have a question about a donated/gifted game. Unfortunately, you would not be able to get a refund for a game gifted or given to you. If someone gifted the game, they would need to try for the refund.

If your friend bought the game as a gift through the Xbox Store he can request a refund.

Seeing as the gifting of games etc is region locked you wont be able to play the game that was gifted if you are in a different region as the purchaser/gifter.

Thanks for coming to the forums with your question. If you did get a 25 digit digital code, you can just gift him the code for the game. If the game was automatically redeemed on your account you will not be able to gift to him now. You would need to request
a refund then gift it the proper way. Keep in mind if he is in a different region he will not be able to use the game.
