    What sought of TV/monitor is the XBX1 connected to? You may have a HDCP issue.

    When I have had this issue I had to quit the movie restart the app and try playing it again. Every once in a while it would take 2 or 3 tries.

    To Rent movies using the Xbox Video app you don't need to have a Gold Membership. As Smwutches states, you will need to use MS points or a Credit Card to rent movies or purchase movies and TV episodes.
