No picture on direct HDMI connect, DVI detected on Display Discovery, HDCP fails

Seven year old setup: "S" console with Kinect and HD DVD external drive. HDMI connected directly to Panasonic Viera P54G25. TosLink to a Sony V333ES receiver. Life was good for seven years.

Situation: Last weekend I took a different HDMI cable and connected the Xbox to a different TV. I have not been able to get the Xbox to work with the Panny on direct HDMI connection since that time. I have read thru a couple-dozen threads of people having
done the exact same scenario with the exact same result; tried every possible solution, watched several horrendous youtube videos, and only one solution (partially) worked: an HT receiver with HDMI pass through displays a picture on my Panny.

Showstopper problem with the solution: HDCP fails. Error dialog "Secure HDCP link not found" for both optical drives. I have tried numerous combinations of HDMI cables and HDMI ports with a Denon AVR-2308ci...I get a picture, I can play games or watch amazon,
but movies on optical discs fail. HDCP fails on BOTH televisions. If this display workaround could only get the HDCP issue resolved, I will swap my old V333ES for this newer 2308ci. I have only recently come into possession of the 2308ci, but cannot find any
pass through solution that will allow HDCP to work...any ideas?

Additional notes:

- For some reason, simply connecting HDMI directly to the P54G25 seems to drastically change the Xbox display settings. I must connect the Xbox back to the receiver, then reset the display via the power button, then manually change the display settings/ resolution.

- Possible clue: if I instead plug the HDMI cable into the TV that it works with, my resolution will have been changed to 640x480, and again I must manually change the settings/resolution.

- In both scenarios listed above, Settings->System->Console Settings->Display claims that the connection type is DVI. Odd, considering that there is no DVI connector on the Xbox. (Yes, I'm aware HDMI is an extension of DVI).

- Black screen if I enable Display Discovery while connected via receiver. Must reset display with power button and configure rez and other settings again.

- Display Discovery has been enabled for seven years, but now it seems to cause the DVI/resolution problem: I must DISABLE Display Discovery in order for the Xbox to "discover" that it is connected via HDMI.

- I must manually set the display output to 1920x1080 while "connected via DVI" and Display Discovery=Enabled, it does not detect my resolution. HDCP doesn't work.

- After disabling Display Discovery, I can manually set the display output to 1080p while "connected via HDMI", it does not detect my resolution. HDCP doesn't work.

- The audio settings also usually get changed from 5.1 to Stereo each time the Xbox thinks it's connected via DVI: audio usually needs to be manually changed after the Xbox detects HDMI (after disabling Display Discovery).

- Connecting to the other TV: no problem with settings/resolution when enabling Display Discovery.

- Connecting to the other TV: HDCP fails...this is what is making me think my Xbox is the exclusive culprit, and is possibly toasted.

- I upgraded the Panny to the latest firmware release; this process also automatically resets everything to factory defaults. I still have a black screen on direct HDMI connection, but display still works when connected through the receiver. So the old firmware
is not the issue.

Things I tried:

- Booting the Xbox after removing the 250G hard drive.

- Reversing the HDMI cable.

- All three HDMI inputs on the Panny.

- Restarting devices in multiple different orders.

- Unplugging and re-plugging devices to force a handshake.

- Unplugging the devices for 60+ minutes.

- Disabling 3D TV in display settings.

- Manually setting TV screen size in Display Settings (was not detected).

- Clearing the cache.

- Several other suggestions that I cannot recall at the moment.

- Spent the last six hours of troubleshooting bare: only the power cable and HDMI cable are currently connected.

The only thing I can think of that I haven't yet tried is a complete nuke and reset of the console itself. I don't know if this will clear up the HDCP issue, and I don't want to wipe out and re-install everything if it won't resolve
HDCP.

So my question is...will flattening the Xbox resolve HDCP? I don't so much care if I can get a picture with a direct HDMI connection to the Panny and must continue using the receiver pass through, I just want the DVD drive and external HD DVD drive to play
movies again. Or if somebody knows of anything I haven't tried that everybody else also doesn't know about...

:)

HDMI DOENST WORK ANYMORE AFTER DASHBOARD UPDATE(14719)
Actually, using a HDMI to DVI adapter does cause an HDCP error
It should not unless the monitor does not support HDCP. I have a console hooked up to a monitor that supports HDCP over DVI via a HDMI to DVI adapter. No issues.
The Display settings even show 1920x1080 and DVI on the 360.

No picture through HDMI all of a sudden

Yes, although both TVs are 1080p I've tried the xbox at a number of resolutions. At one point I did get a colour-ruined, grainy picture at VGA resolution, when display discovery was turned on, although interestingly the xbox insisted at that point that
it was connected via DVI and not HDMI. Turning display discovery off at the same resolution returned the "no signal" black screen.

Use Xbox 360S with DVI monitor

Sounds about right.

Do you know if your monitor is HDCP compliant though? HDCP is a DRM scheme that's built into every modern HDMI and many DVI and DP devices and is used to protect media going over HDMI, DVI, and DP connections. If your monitor isn't HDCP compliant then it
won't be able to display any protected material. This is usually only a problem with cheap or older TV and monitors.

Xbox 360 Elite HDTV Display Issue
However DVI is not compatible with Xbox since it does not support HDCP protocol.
DVI handles HDCP just fine. HDCP support is dependent on the devices, not HDMI or DVI. This is really neither here nor there as he's talking about
a specific company (DVI Gear) and not a DVI cable. The cable is HDMI.

While rare, I have come across an HDMI cable that worked on one device, but not on another. If things are marginal enough, they may not work properly. There are two inputs on the TV that support HDMI. Both should be tried. The 360 should be set to 720p as
the TV's a 1366x768 display. 720p is the closest to the native resolution of the display.
