No headsets work, only earbuds

A few weeks ago I decided to get a headset. When It finally came I plugged it in but couldn't hear any sound. It was an afterglow lvl 1. Since I ordered it used I just figured it was broke. Then the other day I randomly decided to plug a pair of Samsung
earbuds in to see what happens, and everything worked. I was able to hear game sounds and talk to other people. Since earbuds start to kill my ears quickly I went to Walmart and bought a pair of headphones with a mic. I got home and they did the same thing
as the last headset. No game sound, but the mic works. Both headsets work fine everywhere else but on the xbox. Has anybody else had a problem like this? Ive scowered the internet since last night and everything people have tried I've done. I'm using
a controller that came with the 3.5mm jack. Thanks in advance

Mic not Working

My main headset is a turtle beach recon 50x stereo headset, I also have some Samsung earbuds and another offbrand set of earbuds. The TB headset and Samsung earbuds both used to work fine, but the new offbrand earbuds were purchased after the issue began
and have not worked. I also have tested all 3 on a PC with no issues, but do not have another Xbox to test them on.

 

Xbox One is really closer to $600

@ Merlin - You can use old headsets on PS4 and no the earbud is not garbage for people who only use headsets for communication. You only need expensive headsets for in game sounds.

Some headsets are Chat only. That afterglow lvl 1 certainly is, what was the second headset you bought?

My best advice for you would be to go and buy an oem xbox one controller like the version you have, and see if those headsets work on that controller. Its obvious whats happening if it does. I have version 1 without the 3.5 jack and my headset port's always
been an issue where I can hear sound but mic wont work. Or sometimes they would hear me but I get nothing until I unplug my headset.

These things are made in China, so you have to understand that sometimes there are more unlucky cases like yours and mine unfortunately.

Id try your headsets with either a new one or a friends to see if its actually your controllers port thats causing the issue.

Im sure of its under warranty microsoft will resolve this under some circumstances.
