No games are working; message says taking too long to start

My son's XBox One has recently been having problems. It will stop working; the error message says the game is taking too long to start. We have tried rebooting. The only thing that seems to work is pulling the power plug out for several hours. The games
where he sees this problem include Fortnite, Black Ops 4, Apex Legends, so it's not likely that the game itself is the problem.

This device was purchased new about 18 months ago. If we didn't buy an extended warranty and there's some sort of problem, are we out of the warranty time period?

it certainly could be a detection issue, but as I said, it's been working for several months, and goes in and out. the instructions in the link you posted are more about setting it up for the first time. I am quite sure this HD was set up correctly several
months ago, as it only started this problem this past week.

If the problem persists, try doing a
soft factory reset of the console,
Reset and keep games and apps to help reset the operating system. Please note before doing this troubleshooting step,
make sure to know your email and passwords for your Xbox profiles.

well, the thing crashed again, so it's not the USB port.

By crash, I mean that in the middle of playing the game, he got an error message saying the game isn't installed. 0x87e000c8

I should add a couple of details: it's a 500 GB model. We bought an external hard drive, 2TB I think, about 11 months ago. This problem seems to happen with games that are stored on the external drive.

One thing we hadn't tried until a few minutes ago: moving the USB cable from one port on the XBox to the other one. It's only been a few minutes, but it hasn't failed yet. Not sure if this problem has anything at all to do with the external drive, or with the
USB port, or even with the USB cable. But I'm just adding that info that I should have included in the original post.
