No gaint ent for Lava blocks and sand blocks

bizarro and distilled hit it right on. Drill long runs, adjacent to each other, with 2 blocks between to maximize how much rockyou expose, while avoiding redundancy.

Also, keep sand and dirt in your inventory to quickly plug a hole if need be (be it cavern drop, water or lava),

Also, I tend to dig from top block down, which seems to give me enough warning if I've broken through to lava or a drop.

If you drill the bottom block first, then the upper block, you will tend to advance into the now open space, potentially failing to notice the hole in the floor. Starting from the top down makes you look down BEFORE you advance.

You don't need redstone. Find a pool of lava. Take gravel with you and use it to make a pool of about 6/6. Have a few buckets of water with you. Once you make that pool throw a bucket of water in the middle. Most of the lava should turn to obsidian and leave
a block of water. break blocks next to the water. The water will flow into that block and turn the lava into obsidian. I got 30 blocks yesterday doing that in one pool.

I use torches every 7-10 blocks, or a block of Netherrack here and there, or even a single block mined out and filled with lava every so often.
