No free first gamertag change?

It is stated on the Xbox support site about changing your gamertag on the Xbox one that the first time is free but any changes after that have a fee. Just got the Xbox one and when I go through the process it tries to charge me $9.99 to change it.

The only way to change your gamertag once for free is if you accepted the system assigned gamertag when you signed up your account,, If you made your own gamertag then there is no free first change.

I do agree that the actual cost of a gamertag is expensive though, But i don't see that cost ever changing.

 

No Free Gamertag Change!?

Hi, I've gotten into a serious problem. I somehow DON'T have a free gamertag change!? I don't believe I changed the gamertag via a free token, as it was around 2014... Is there ANY way of getting another one - maybe by half off price? I seriously had this
gamertag for a really long time! I'd like to know what I can do, thank you.

 

The free gamertag change is only available for the first 30 days of an account and only if the system chose a random gamertag for you. If you chose your gamertag, you'll have to pay to change it.

 

Just to further clarify what Smwutches said - if you create a new account on Xbox One, then you have one free Gamertag change. It looks like your profile has quite a history on it. You would have had that free GT change on your Xbox 360 console when setting
up your profile for the first time.
