No audio via HDMI, tried multiple cables, ports and Tv's.

Following the most recent update to my Xbox 360, I am unable to get audio on my TV via the HDMI connector.

The unit is up to date, ports are in excellent shape, no damage or even wear and tear.

    What Doesn't Work:

    • Changing ports on the TV in question. (Sharp Aquos LCD)
    • Changing cable manufacturers (Monster, PNY, Generic)
    • Changing the TV itself.
    • Enabling or Disabling display discovery on the console.
    • Changing the audio format from Digital Stereo to DTS etc.
    What does work:

    • Composite cables do produce audio on the TV
    • Optical output produces audio on the TV
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Silas

    :)

  2. HDMI Handshake?

    Hi BR,

Hmm.. Have you tried using other HDMI cables on that console with other TV's?

I ask because if multiple cables & multiple TV's do not work, we are looking at a console HDMI port issue.

Let us know, and we can work from there.

    No Audio

Try this setup. Connect your receiver to your TV via [whatever audio cable you use], then have the HDMI cable going from your TV's HDMI In port that you're using to your console's HDMI Out port. If that doesn't work, try using a S/PDIF cable (also known
as, an Optical Audio cable) going from your receiver to the S/PDIF port on the console, then still having the HDMI cable going from the TV to the HDMI Out port on the console. Usually, having an HDMI cable going from a receiver into the HDMI In port on the
console doesn't work, because it's intended purpose is only as pass-through for a cable or satellite set-top box. Good luck!

If other things like sky work on your tv with HDMI then I can only assume your HDMI on your xbox 360 is somehow damaged.

    Hi Crozier,

This current tv (Sharp Aquos), seems to selectively disables the sound output to the optical link, when the audio mode is set to 'variable'.

The Variable setting turns off the TV's speakers and enables the optical audio output. I use this setting for cable, Blu-ray & media pc all via HDMI.

The 'Fixed' setting disables optical output and just plays though the TV speakers. Xbox sounds are audible in this setting, but just not though my home theatre.

Perhaps the TV is managing the audio pass-though on some condition that's being met or the Xbox is disabling audio over HDMI for the same reason.

I'm trying to figure out how to manipulate these conditions using cables or a HDMI switch device between the sources and the TV, that has an optical out on it.

Let me know your thoughts - Ill post a solution as soon as apparent.

Could you possibly borrow a friends or a family members console to see if his/her console has sound on the television via HDMI? If your friends console produces sound it will give you the answer that your console has something wrong with the HDMI. If so
    call up support.

connecting my xbox 360s and tv to a av reviever

First off, how many systems are you trying to connect to what devices? Things can get complicated when trying to hook up a system as there are many different setups and variables that can affect this issue. Since it appears to be a sound system you are trying
to use, you can check outsupport.xbox.com/.../connect-sound-system.

I recommend using the HDMI cable connected to your TV and using one of the methods in as your issue could be you trying to connect your A/V receiver to your Xbox 360 via HDMI cable. This will result in sound, but no picture on the TV. Depending on your console
model, you can use a audio cable recommended by the manufacturer of your TV by plugging one end of it to the output port of your TV and the other goes to the audio input port of your A/V receiver if you system is an E model. If it is an S model, HDMI still
goes to the TV, the digital audio cable plugs into the optical audio port on your console and the other end goes to the digital audio input on the receiver. If you're using an A/V cable or component cable instead, that cable goes to the TV with the audio cable
unplugged while the digital audio cable goes to the same ports on the Xbox 360 and receiver. Finally, if you are using a console of the original design, the HDMI cable still goes to the TV while you must use a HDMI audio adaptor on the A/V port of the console,
the audio cable goes to it's port on the adaptor and then goes to the input on the receiver or if you are using A/V or component cables, those still go to the TV except that you must unplug the audio cables that plug in to the TV end and that the digital audio
cable goes to the TOSLINK port on the A/V cable and then to the receiver. I forgot to mention that if you are using an HDMI cable for your TV that if you intend to using standard audio cables that no matter the model, the red and white cables plug into the
ports on the HDMI audio adaptor and the other ends to the corresponding ports on the receiver.

Sorry for the wall of text, but I effectively described the 6 basic ways of connecting these devices. If you have more questions, just ask.
