  1. No audio through optical cable to surround sound system. XBox One

Hi. I'm struggling to output audio from my XBoxOne to an old surround sound system via an optical cable.

The set up at the moment after a couple of trips to Maplin Electronics and chats with cable geeks is:

    • Xbox to Monitor (Panasonic TH-50PHD88K) via HDMI (if I connect a speaker to the monitor, there is sound, but not the quality I'm after)
    • Xbox to old DVD Tuner / Surround Sound system (Pioneer XV-DV55) via optical cable
    • The surround sound system is set to 'digital optical' on 'audio 1'
I assumed I'd simply need to adjust the sound settings on the XBox and that would be that, but I've had no success at all. In
settings | display and sound there are the following options under the
digital audio heading. I have tried all sorts of variations, but the logical one to me was to turn off HDMI and then set the optical options to 'stereo uncompressed' or 'bitstream out'. (Looking at the manual for the surround
sound system, I'm told that it recognises both Dolby Digital and DTS so I assumed it would work.)

    HDMI audio options

    • Off
    • Stereo uncompressed
    • 5.1 uncompressed
    • 7.1 uncompressed
    • Bitstream out
    Optical audio options

    • Off
    • Stereo uncompressed
    • Bitstream out
    Bitstream format

    • DTS Digital Surround
    • Dolby Digital
Any help would be very much appreciated. I've spent an afternoon getting frustrated and have no idea what to try next. By the way, I have tried powering off the XBox after changing settings and then powering up again with the surround sound system already
on in the hope that the XBox would pick it up.

    Many thanks

    Phil

    :)

Optical Out with No Surround Sound

Huh, Most receivers have between 5 and 8 HDMI inputs so if you plug everything into it then only one cable needs to get to your monitor. I use the HDMI to my receiver for sound and of course the TV, I use the optical out for headphones. There is no receivers
that have Optical Out that supports surround sound and very few tvs that have an optical out that supports surround sound other than that what is broadcast over the air.

This is a forum and I would not mind hearing a better way to accomplish surround sound through a home audio system while also getting it through headphones.

Yes, my Xbox 360 plays Dobly Surround Sound from the Optical Out, BUT XBOX ONE DOES NOT.

No audio through optical cable to surround sound system. XBox One

Hi Phil! Sorry to hear you're having some trouble with sound. I will say that while the console IS capable of outputting in both DTS and Dolby Digital and the decoder device is capable of both, I've found it to be a bit fiddly when choosing DTS. I have a
7.1 Dolby Surround headset system connected via Optical. When I choose DTS, it is completely dead, no sound at all. As soon as I switch to Dolby Digital, it works perfectly.

You definitely want your HDMI audio to "Off," and your Optical Audio should be set to "Bitstream Out," because optical needs bitstream to deliver multiple channels - stereo is the only uncompressed option. Then, after choosing Bitstream, you want to set
your Bitstream Format to Dolby Digital, and that SHOULD work. It works on mine, but that's not a guarantee for everyone by any means.

    Let me know!

  6. Thanks again Jaymo. Sadly, no joy. I've just attached speakers to the monitor for now as I'm spending far too much time on it!! I read somewhere that optical or non-hdmi is 'beta'. I wonder if I should be telling the XBox in some other area of settings
what I'm up to? Anything in 'system'?

Hmm... sorry that didn't work for you! Out of curiosity, do you have an HDMI in/out on your Surround Sound? It could be a bit of incompatibility between the Xbox's compression codec and the decompression of your Surround Sound receiver. I've heard of a lot
of people that have issues when running through a decoder, which are fixed by setting it to "HDMI Uncompressed." Then, you can input your sound to the Decoder Via HDMI, and run HDMI from the decoder to the TV (for video only.)

The surround sound beta was initially just after the system launched, I don't think, IIRC, that it is in beta anymore.

That HDMI thing is just one possibility. I could be making it too complicated, too, because it could even be something as simple as a bad Optical Cable. They're such fragile little things, they can break pretty easily.

No audio through optical cable to surround sound system. XBox One

    Hello Jaymo,

I contact you because I have the same issue with my xbox one and my decoder which is a blu-ray player home cinema (PIONEER BCS-717).

The first 3 times I used these materials together, the 5.1 worked perfectly.

But more and more often some sounds (like the voices) started to stop to work while the rest of the sounds still did. And that is permanent. HDMI audio options have always been on "5.1 uncompressed". Now only the "Stereo uncompressed" and the "Bitstream
out" allow all the sounds to work but I lost my 5.1.

I also tried to connect an optical wire between my decoder and my xbox one. When I switch the HDMI audio off and switch the Optical audio on, there is no sound at all.

I do not find any solution. I guess the problem is about the Xbox's compression codec and the decompression of my Sourround Sound Receiver as you talked about a while ago on this forum.

Have you found any solution ?

I hope you can help me.

    Thank you.

Hmm... when you connected your Optical Cable, did you happen to change your audio output? For the Optical Cable to work, HDMI audio will need to be off like you mention, and then it will need to be set to Bitstream Out, and then Dolby Digital (rather than
DTS.) That's the only reason I can think of why it wouldn't work at all after connecting the optical cable. I'm not certain what could have happened to cause the HDMI out to stop working after it had worked for so long, but the optical cable would be a workaround
if we could get it going.

    Let me know!

    Hi,

I'm having a very similar problem (SkyQ to X-box one via HDMI and then audio from X-box to Cambridge Audio AV Receiver [too old for HDMI] via optical).

My AV Receiver detects the incoming Dolby but reports only two channels (no centre speaker and no surround speakers).

I've tried all sorts and now suspect that this is perhaps caused by some digital rights management issues with optical not being able to support the DRM.

I am waiting on receiving an HDMI-optical converter and will post if this fixes the problem. No audio through optical cable to surround sound system. XBox One :)

Cheers for now..! No audio through optical cable to surround sound system. XBox One :)

Need serious help with Audio settings please

Hi Danny! It sounds to me like the best option for you here is to set your audio out to Bitstream either Dolby Digital or DTS (depending on which sounds/works best for you.) The way you describe it, it sounds like the HDMI cable is going directly from your
One to your TV, without going through an HDMI pass-through on your SS system. The 5.1 through HDMI wouldn't work entirely, because I'm assuming your TV by itself is not a Surround Sound TV, hence needing the SS system besides.

So, by selecting 5.1 over HDMI, your One is sending the surround signal to the TV which is then trying to play a surround sound signal through its built-in stereo speakers, which won't work.

Bitstream is the audio format which sends surround sound signal via optical cable on the One. By setting this setting to a Surround, the One sends audio through the Optical cable directly to your SS system, which takes care of decoding the multi-channel
    audio.

The other option would be to run your HDMI out from your ONE into the SS system, then out from the SS system/Blu Ray into the TV. This would allow the Surround Signal to pass Via HDMI to the surround system, and the video would pass through to the TV (IF
your SS system supports HDMI passthrough, which some do not.)

    Hope this helps!

How to set up Tritton Warheads to XBox One

Benslay, go to settings, display and sound, under digital audio set your optical audio to stereo uncompressed. Dts surround will not work with these and we are blessed to not have a machine that can pump out 7:1 surround at launch through the optical cable.

Xbox One no surround sound on my home theater

First, try going to Settings > Display and Sound > In the middle, change the "HDMI Audio" setting to '5.1 uncompressed'.

If you still can't get 5.1 audio to your sound system, try buying an optical audio cable and plug that from the back of your xbox one into your sound system and change the settings on your sound system to use the 'Optical In' or a setting that chooses that
input. Don't forget to change the settings like the one above, but under "Optical Audio" choose "Bitstream Out" and change "Bitstream Format" to "DTS Digital Surround." The optical audio port is right between the HDMI in and out ports.

Connecting XBox one to receiver with no hdmi port

Like dlCHIEF58 says, connecting Your Xbox One to the reciver with a Optical cable (Tos-link) is the suggested way to go..

I did that with my Xbox One and the difference in sound was clearly noticeable and well Worth it.. But I did need to go into the display and sound settings and enable "Bitstream out" and bitstream format Dolby digital (on my Samsung reciver)for it to give
surround sound... Most Surround sound systems will support Optical audio i belive..
