No 4k output to Panasonic TC-55CX420U with Xbox One S

Just got a shiny new Xbox One S 2 TB... which means I just wasted $285 (after trade in of my Xbox One 500gb) for something that does not work at all as advertised. Anyway... sigh... I am connecting it to a Panasonic TC-55CX420U TV which is a 4K television,
it supports 2160p @ 60Hz through HDMI 2.0 but the Xbox One S will not allow me to select the 4k resolution, it just throws an error and resets it back to 1080p.

Here is the "4K TV details" page after getting the error:

    [View:https://s31.postimg.org/b7vmvf2mj/IMG_0008.jpg:550:0]

I have the input explicitly set to HDMI 2.0 (up from the default 1.4) in the TV settings and I am using the included HDMI cable, it obviously says right there that it supports 4K UHD (60Hz) so why can't I select that resolution!!?? This is INSANE, so frustrated.
And yes I have tried other HDMI inputs and tried power cycling everything, nothing helps, 1080p is all I can choose, ugh!

    :)

    Xbox One S - 4K issues

    Hi Guys

    I have a Panasonic 4k 60HZ and its connected via an amplifier which has 4k output 2.2 HDMI. SKY Q runs perfectly fine but when I connect using the Xbox One S HDMI cable included I get the following issues;

    4K ticked

    50hz ticked

    24hz ticked

But when I click 4K details I get an error (red circle with cross through) Your Tv does not support 4k UHD (60hz) video output will not be upscaled to 4K.

I am only allowed to set the 4K ticked box once I take off auto TV detect and select HDMI 1080p setting....

Any help or options would be appreciated

  4. No 4k output to Panasonic TC-55CX420U with Xbox One S

    Hey there Bad Dachsunds,

You're going to want to use this guide to troubleshoot those problems, It's possible the TV doesn't fully support the needs required to get 4K on the Xbox One S. It's also possible that there is a setting that needs to be changed on the TV to allow this
    connection to work properly.

Take a look at this guide and let us know how it goes.

Man that guide is the first thing I looked at, if you would go back and read my post you would find that I already addressed every bullet point in that guide. That guide does not help in the slightest. According to my TV's specs it supports everything required
except for HDR10 and the only setting that should restrict the resolution is the HDMI link protocol which I already said I explicitly set to HDMI 2.0. There is some sort of bug here, because the "4k details page" clearly shows it detects that it supports 4k
@ 60Hz but it still doesn't allow me to select it, it just defaults to 1080p. Listen I have been talking to you AND Panasonic support about this and neither one of you wants to do anything beyond send me scripted responses, next stop is twitter. So put down
the macros, close Dash and actually dig into this one please... sorry but I am very frustrated at this point with it.

Hi, I guess you already checked for any firmware update for the TV ?

Yep, I am running the latest version 6-27-2016 of the TV firmware, I updated it via a USB stick and reset to factory defaults first things first. Then here are the TV settings I have tested:

    TV Settings:

*Note, where applicable this applies to all 3 HDMI inputs, I tried each one to see if it helped.

    System>

    Transparency: Off

    System>Other Settings

    HDMI EDID: 2.0

    System>Other Settings>HDMI Link

HDMI Link Control: Off (also tried On)

    Picture>

Picture Mode: Game Mode (also tried Standard)

    BlueScreen: Off

    ...

    Color Temp.: Normal

Format: Just Scan (also tried Wide)

    Picture>Advanced Settings>

Dynamic Luminance: On (also tried Off) *as an additional note, I am not sure if this is related to HDR or not

Noise Reduction: Off (also tried Low and Medium)

    Picture>Advanced Settings>Color Space

Color Mode: Dynamic (also tried Standard)

No 4k output to Panasonic TC-55CX420U with Xbox One S

To be honest this isn't one of my strong points so I headed out into the Interweb to learn some things about the differing HDMI standards.

I believe the Xbox One S supports HDMI 2.0a with support for HDMI 2.0 possibly coming sometime in an update, so whether that is causing some communication issues between the Xbox and TV I'm not sure.

I wish there was more I could offer personally in the way of help, I suspect you have tried a different HDMI cable, the cable provided with the Xbox isn't always the best cable to be using.

If you get bored and want a read.

I don't see anywhere in the documentation where it says HDMI 2.0a is required; and 2.0a is backwards compatible with 2.0 (it just can't send/receive HDR signals) so I find it hard to believe that the Xbox One is incapable of sending a 4k signal to a HDMI
2.0 only TV. There is something else going on here and so far I haven't gotten any help from MS or Panasonic, guess I am just out of luck at this point. I have read all the links and generic info on the web already, there is nothing in the specs of my TV to
keep it from working with the One S but it doesn't anyway and likely never will. Wish I didn't buy either of these devices.

So far, it seems like the X1 S is only partially compatable with a tiny number of 4k tv's and only fully compatable with an even smaller, much more expensive range.

  11. Hey, Bad! It looks like you might have actually found the issue.

    In the
    support article
that Mister Mascot linked to you on Friday calls this out as being the issue.

    *emphasis my own*

You will need to have HDR10 (also called BT2020) on your TV to be able to use full 4K capabilities. Because your TV does not have it, you will have to use basic 1080p on your TV. Looking at the
manual online for your TV (I believe this is the one, let me know if it isn't), I am unable to find that it supports 4K outside of the resolution; there are no mentions for 4K items in this manual other than the resolution and the name of model.

Sorry to see that the TV doesn't support HDR10 to be able to display 4K quality items on your Xbox One S. If this smart TV updates to support it and you still run into issues, please be sure to post back so that we can troubleshoot further. Thanks for understanding!

As far as I can tell it does not specifically state that HDR10 is required just to set the 4k resolution (just that it is required for HDR), that wouldn't even make sense. HDR10 is not required for something to display content in a specific resolution, the
resolution 3840x2160 doesn't require HDR to work, resolution is independent of HDR.

And I already know that my TV doesn't support HDR or at least doesn't support the HDR10 protocol, but that is fine, I don't care about HDR, but I do care about running things in the 3840x2160 resolution at 60Hz (which my TV definitely supports). If this
is the case MS has made a device that only works with like 10 models of TV's... why are they even selling this?

Seems to me like either a bug or an arbitrary restriction put in place to make people go spend $1500-$5000 on a brand new 2016 OLED TV supporting HDR10. I see no legitimate technical reason that the resolution can't be set to 4k without HDR. Even 4k blu-rays
with HDR do not require the TV to have HDR, it just shows the film minus the HDR details when played on a non-HDR TV.

This is what I like to call total hog wash and MS needs to fix it.

No 4k output to Panasonic TC-55CX420U with Xbox One S

My tv is a Vizio M-43c, 2015. Has no HDR at all, but the features menu on my X1S say the top feature, upscaling, will work. The rest are blocked out. And I can confirm it does. Looking at my TV's info display, it says 2160p even while playing a game, and
    it looks spectacular.

I don't have any 4k blue rays to test, nor do I have 4k on Netflix and 4K isn't supported in our Youtube yet. But unless HDR10 is supported in mine and I don't know it, you don't have to have it for regular 4k upscaling and display.

Maybe the tool isn't reporting correctly?

@Satsuki Totally, this is how it *should be working for me as well. I don't see any reason why HDR would be required to set the 4k resolution. This has got to be some sort of bug... so frustrating.

Also Misses Quinzel, I find it very rude and disrespectful that you marked your own answer as the "verified" answer even though it clearly does not answer the question at all and I, as the OP, did not state that your response answered my question at all
    (because it doesn't).

If you as "Official Staff" don't understand the question being asked, or don't understand the technical issues behind it, the only helpful thing you can do is to escalate this to someone higher up the chain. Marking your response as verified is a form of
thread sabotage as far as I am concerned.
