Next Xbox idea: flash drive not discs

I was thinking about frame rates and install times and sizes for the next Xbox, well what if it didn't have a disc drive at all but if games came out on the new format of a USB stick? Think about it: it's safer to drop than a disc, you could simply detach
it like an old school cartridge, not have to install anything just plug and play. Games could be around 100gb with the 4k patch already on them, and a cooling fan wouldn't be needed or a disc drive inside the new console, leaving the hardware design to be
as compact as desired. Just some sort of hood or visor to cover the USB, and any previously bought xbox one games on the account can likewise be reinstalled digitally from your existing account. Plus you won't owe any money to Sony for using their blu ray
technology.

can you not install discs onto externals? i'm like 90% that i've installed one of the gta5 discs onto one of my flash drives...unless i just installed to the hard drive then moved it to the flash.

 

When will Rockstar update GTA 5 with the patch?

Can i install the "install" disc1 to a flash drive and the "play" disc2 to another flash drive? I dont have room on my HD, plus i get errors when installing discs to my xbox HD

 

Flash drives would be too unstable.

 

In addition to what Smwuthches has said the price of Blu Ray discs is very low compared to the price of flash drives.

 

Why would Flash drives be unstable? For reading games, they would last for years, saving to them is something else though. While all Flash media uses something known as 'wear levelling' to stop them saving data to the same part
of the flash storage over and over and thereby eventually wearing the Flash media out, reading the drives does not cause them to wear out over the same period of time. Indeed, the Nintendo's Switch uses Flash media exclusively for their games - but comparatively,
their games are quite small.

There is of course a massive caveat to using large Flash storage for games, and that is cost. Distributing games on purely on Flash media would add about $10 - $15 to the cost of the game (or in my country £20) if using 128 GB media. The next Xbox won't
be handheld, so there is little point using Flash storage. The next console will likely use BD-XL discs which are 100 GB and would cost less than a dollar per disc. Yes they can be damaged, you need to take care of them more.

The cooling fans in the console are there to keep the CPU and graphics hardware cool - which on the Xbox One family are integrated into one die, what is called an APU or Advanced processing Unit. Whatever type of hardware the new console utilises, it will
still need fans to keep it cool. The Blu-ray drive doesn't need a fan. They won't be able to make the next Xbox smaller than the One S or One X, even if it didn't have a BD drive.

And lastly, contrary to what people believe, Sony does not own the exclusive sole rights to the Blu-ray disc format. It's licensing is part of a wider consortium made of nine other corporations; Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips,
Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung Electronics.

 

I could be wrong, and if so I apologize. But I previously worked in a print shop and customers would bring in flash drives daily. There were several times when the flash drive had become corrupt, simply just wouldn't work, etc. So I would imagine the same
would be true in this case, then there goes your game.

 

If the information on the drive never changed, and was read only, it could last for decades.

 

USB storage is too expensive especially when you get above 16GB USB stick equivalents to 32 64 and 128 SDH/SDXC cards are too expensive that even sdxc cards would be cheaper. It costs a lot more to put a game which averages 35gb into USB. Disc is cheaper.
Without a disc drive u won't b able 2 play DVDs and Blu-ray movies.
