Newbie Q - how is DLC etc managed on Xbox One?

    Hi there

I’m (about to be) new to the Xbox One from 360 and I need to ask a bit of a newbie question about set up.

I understand the Shared with Gold idea. However I don’t quite understand what happens with DLC etc from games (and who can use it in the future).

So for example I buy Game A which has the core game on the disc but codes for DLC, expansions etc for download. Where is that DLC etc actually stored and how is it managed for other people – i.e. if I switched the ‘lead’ account on the Xbox One in future
to another MS account, would I lose access to it as it is stored with the first account?

Sorry if this is a dim question – any help appreciated (basically I’m trying to work out if there are any downsides to setting up an Xbox One with one MS account but then potentially changing that account in the future).

    :)

    Microsoft Money Account Issues?

I managed to successfully download a game from the Arcade, (Slenderman if anyone was curious).

I put in the Alan Wake disc and managed to purchase the DLCs without a problem!

Guess I was being a newbie not knowing I need to insert the disc to download DLCs. I thought I did before when I downloaded a DLC for Left 4 Dead but I guess not...

Newbie Q - how is DLC etc managed on Xbox One?

It's stored on your hard drive.

If you look at a game in "my games & apps" & press the start button( the one with 3 lines) you will see the option to manage game, click on that & the game & all it's dlc will be there.

It will be the same for the person you are sharing with.

Thanks for the reply - so I'm reading that as if I log out the account that uploaded the DLC, it will still be available to everyone using the Xbox (it won't somehow be treated like a "saved game" on the 360 where it can only be used by the individual profile).

If by the "Shared with Gold idea" you mean the "Home Console" feature, where an account designates a specific console as their "Home Console", which then shares their Gold membership and purchased games with other accounts on the console, then you already
    know how it works:

An account buys games DLC and Gold memberships, and as long as the console is set as this account's "Home Console", all other accounts on that console can play that account's games, DLC and play multiplayer with the shared Gold membership.

If you buy a game on disc, then the disc has to be in the drive to play the game. DLC that you get via a code, is bound to your Gamertag, and through the "Home Console" feature, others on that home console can access the DLC content as well (usually. I have
heard of CoD Season Passes being ONLY for the individual that bought them, and aren't shared, but I don't play CoD, so I can't verify that).

You can switch the underlying Microsoft Account email of your Gamertag, and since the purchases and code redemptions are tied to your Gamertag, you will keep your purchases.

But you shouldn't create a new Gamertag. Use the Gamertag you used on the Xbox 360, since your past purchases on the Xbox 360 can then be accessed through the Xbox One Backwards Compatibility. Only change the Microsoft Account email that you use to sign
into your Gamertag by creating an alias.

Thanks Arminator - that's really interesting. I'm particularly intrigued by your last sentences. I would have assumed that the past purchases would have been linked to the MS account you bought them from, not the Gamertag. If I'm reading you right, it would
be the purchase history that would move with the Gamertag, Just confused by your reference to an alias - does the alias take the name of the 360 Gamertag and you set that alias up in the new MS account? (sorry if I've got this completely wrong)

OK - I got it all set up last night and seems to work. Brought my old gamertag on along with the new one (which I won't use). All games available to all accounts. Only issue now is whopping download sizes for games and updates - just the first one was 47GB
and took most of the evening, even though had the disk. That was new.

Games can be up to 80gb now. That's the norm.

If it's a disc copy then it has to be installed as the Blu-ray drive can't play games straight from the disc, again, that's how it is on Xbox & PlayStation.

Installing games from a disc is can be slightly quicker if you do it while not connected to live, then just download any updates later.

You can also set your console up to download any updates when your xbox is off in the settings.

Thanks DB - yes - I saw that trick on a forum - but with Star Wars Battlefront it only takes 19GB from the disk but over 20GB in updates / maps etc from the web. I don't have cable so DSL ing that amount of data is a fair chunk of time (I'm just glad I'm
    not on metered internet anymore).

Also the 500GB HDD is hardly going to cut it is it? Already thinking about an external HDD and I've only had it a week. Should really come with 1 or 2TB as standard given those game sizes.

    Yeah,500gb does fill up fast.

There are 1tb consoles but if you have the 500gb one then you will need an external hard drive at some point.
