  1. NEWBIE Advice, Xbox One "S" - Download or Buy the Disc?

Should I download games, or buy the discs?

I've been reading pros/cons... but I confused on the way it works. To an old schooler like me, it seems a no-brainer to buy a hard copy. I was confused when I read that a physical copy must not only be uploaded to the xBox hard drive(really?), but
also remain in the machine during game play. This suggests the machine reads off the inserted disc, as the game is played (a'la PS2). However, I read digital games, once downloaded and installed, run off Xbox's built-in hard disk. If
I just want to turn on the machine and quickly start playing a game is there any difference is start-up times? Can someone with experience with both options (disc vs digital) tell me what works best? Which is faster to operate?

IF I go with digital copies for their various merit, what kind of download speeds can I expect? How long from, "Hey, that looks like a great game.. I'll buy it on-line and download it!" To, "This game is great! (as I play). I have what I think as a reasonably
fast/reliable connection (100Mbs download on Speedtest). Given my connection what's an average wait time for downloads? What next? Just start playing, or is there more

[I read today a guy transferring a game from built-in Xbox hard drive to an external drive had to wait over 40 minutes just to transfer a game (presumably using a USB 3.0 connection). This seemed ridiculously long. I could hardwire the Xbox with an ethernet
cable, but prefer not to. I just want to play games, and not fuss with hardware, wiring and download times.]

I see physical copies are sometimes cheaper (sometimes a lot cheaper; like old versions of great games I've never seen/played). That appeals to me a lot. But really, in the day-to-day activity, its about accessibility and convenience.

I read the digital games are virtually portable with the cloud (how's THAT work if you need to have the game on the Xbox's hard drive to play it?) I may open a 500GB Xbox One on Xmas. I read I should plan on purchasing an external drive as that fills up
fairly quick. Also, I read games load/play faster off the external drive's better quality hardware and USB 3.0 connections.

As you can see, I am a but flustered by what to expect with this new-to-me platform.

    Guidance anyone? Straight talk appreciated.

    :)

  4. NEWBIE Advice, Xbox One "S" - Download or Buy the Disc?

To be honest it's horses for courses....

Both Digital and Physical run of the hard-drive, so that answers that question. The physical is installed to the Hard-drive the same way a digital is. It only reads the disc for the initial license read, after that, it runs of the HD. The issue is with Download
Speeds and Data Caps, Some games can be upto and not unheard of in excess of 50Gig. And this can slaughter anyone with a data cap. So most people still go with physical as there is only the update to download. You download speed is just fine to download quickly
enough, but you probably won't get full speed. I have 120Meg, and still get a max of anywhere between 30-50 Meg Download from Xbox

Secondly, you talk about convenience and accessibility, what is it to pick up the disc you want and put it into the Xbox......... 30 seconds max. Do you do so much with your time and life, that you cannot spare that much time to load a disc in and for it
    to read. I know i don't.

USB HD's are good, especially if you are only getting a 500gb as that space gets filled very quickly and over 100 of that is operating system..... And yes you can take you hd round someone house and play it, with digital you won't have to take the disc,
but you would still need to be logged in on their machine under your name so that the game can communicate with their servers to ensure you own the game.

Pros of Physical are...... 95 times out of 100 they are cheaper through lifespan of game, Re-sale or trade-in, can lend to anyone, will always have the game if the game is ever removed form the servers. (yes i have lost digital games that have been removed).
Does not take long to install, compared with digital. and does reduce any data cap you may have. Also get special extras from the likes of amazon game, etc for 1st day purchased. Shiny tin sets and collectors editions. Cons..... Having to spend 30 seconds
putting the disc in. Depending on how you store your games, breakable.... (I have cd's from 1988 that still play, so that is a no brainer for me.)

Pros of digital are....... Ease of access (Instant game, No disc), The odd deal, You can share that game with another xbox WITHIN your household. (Do not gameshare with other people, that is against the TOS, and can lead to a ban or account hacked). Can
sometimes be downloaded early, and play at midnight. Not always though.

Hope this helps, i have always been a physical person, not because i am old, which i am, but if you look after the pennies, the pounds look after themselves......

Physical is better in that you can trade them in, but I do buy mostly digital. There are other sites that are legit such as Cdkeys.com that sometimes sell digital game codes really cheap and the marketplace on the console has some really good deals sometimes.

Discs need to be installed because it's a blu-ray. Any blu ray games console including the PS3 has to install the games. It has something to do with the data on the disc not being able to be read fast enough just from the disc or something like that.

Download speeds have just been increased with the latest console update. If you have under 100mbps you'll get about a 40% speed increase. If you are lucky enough to have over 100mbps you'll get an 80% download speed increase. Either way it's a noticeable
difference. I was surprised how much faster it was when I downloaded a game last night.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey - bought on disc, still asks for me to buy it in Microsoft Store

Because I am such a newbie: I bought the Xbox One S, and this version have a slot for discs. One of my reasons for buying it was because it has a BlueRay-player. And I bought regular Xbox One games on disc. After some time on Google I see that some discs
are compatible with S and some are not. Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is not one of them. The two other games I bought are compatible.

Thanks for helping me along! I feel quite stupid now šŸ˜‚
