Newb question - How does Xbox Live work with physical games I bought?

So, I'm brand new to the world of xbox live and online gaming. Can someone help me understand how this works with games I've already got the DVDs for?

Specifically, the Xbox is for my kids, but they always end up scratching the crud out of their game discs, so will xbox live help with this? Right now, we have an Xbox One, and if we try to play a game without the dvd in the console, it gives a msg that
we need to be logged in to xbox live, etc

If we get a xbox live membership, will they be able to play without having to put the game disc in the console? Is that a benefit of having a membership?

This is the reason I modded our old Wii, cuz I got tired of cleaning/re-surfacing and rebuying games that they couldn't make last. What's the best solution for not having to put the game disc into the console?

Xbox Live Confusion?

So I'm really confused to how Xbox Live works... Do I NEED it in order to play my games online or does it just give you perks and stuff.... I never had this problem with my WII U because the Nintendo Network account is free... Now Xbox Live is asking me to pay the same price as an actual game, just to play my games for a year... I know that Play Station has this too but the free games like Warframe have free online.. Well, the question is: How Does Xbox Live Work? Can I Play Online Without It?

The only solution to not requiring the disc to be in the console is to buy the game digitally. The benefits of a Gold membership is the ability to play online, free games each month, and exclusive offers and discounts.

 

Or teach your kids to take care of the discs like they were vinyl LPs, simple.
