New Xbox S HDMI

The xbox one s comes with a HDMI 2.0 cable as standard & the op did say they had just bought a new xbox one s.

VRR is supported via HDMI 2.1. The Xbox One X is the only console that has HDMI 2.1. Xbox One S has HDMI 2.0. This Fall 2020 the new Xbox Series X will also support HDMI 2.1 features like VRR, Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and up to 120fps support.

Be sure to use the HDMI 2.1 cable that comes with the Xbox Series S.

TY, would a 2.1 capable monitor be preferable as well?

Really depends what level of gaming you are going for...1080p, 1440p or 4k (though the 4k is just an upscale of 1440p)?

I read an article earlier which made this point:

"If you're buying the more budget-minded Xbox Series S, the console also has an HDMI 2.1 port, but it instead targets a resolution of 1440p at 120fps, which HDMI 2.0 can already support. But using 2.1 on the Series S will still give you the benefits of dynamic HDR as well as improved color and subsampling."

However, if you aren't using 4k, then HDR will be missing anyway as the console will only activate HDR in 4k resolution. Given how high HMDI 2.1 enabled monitors currently are still, I personally wouldn't go for one...just not really sure the benefits match the extra cost over a HDMI 2.0 monitor
