New Xbox S, aiming with controller is terrible, dead zone is way too big, how to calibrate or ...

Hi, I just got an Xbox One S and the dead zone on the new controller seems calibrated terribly.

That means that when I move the thumbstick by a small amount, the controller doesn't register it as a move and nothing happens on the screen. After you move it enough, the controller registers it and seems to move it dramatically.

I loaded up Tomb Raider and got to a part where you have to aim your gun. I move the thumbstick a little and nothing happens, I then move it enough so I get out of 'the dead zone' and then all of a sudden it jumps way to fast which makes aiming completely
frustrating and impossible if you need small movements.

Am I missing something? It's so bad it makes me not want to play. I saw some online videos that you can calibrate an elite controller, how can you calibrate an Xbox One S controller?

I'm thinking about returning the whole thing. Can anyone else chime in if they've had similar issues? Maybe I'm alone and I should try swapping the controller?

:)

Far Cry 2 has terrible Aiming controls

I just bought Far Cry 2 on backward compatible, and my god, the aiming control is horrendous.

Big dead zone, then nearly the rest of zone is taken up with fine aiming which doesn’t work well, and very end of stick range is turning speed.

It’s unplayable like this.

I’ve tried Xbox one controller, and presets with Elite controller - either way the aiming is terrible.

PS very early game didn’t have abysmal pop in like I remembered originally, so so far that’s been impressive on the technical side. But with that control it’s not playable.

Xbox 360 controller - Bring it back!

Does anyone else miss the 360 controller?

The new controllers seem wonky. The dead zones seem larger. They seem to malfunction at a higher rate in my experience. They also seem like they were designed for smaller hands. The new headset adapter bologna is just terrible.

Bring back the 360 controller!

I wonder if it would take much effort to produce xbox one controllers with the 360's design.

4. New Xbox S, aiming with controller is terrible, dead zone is way too big, how to calibrate or ...

You can try these steps:

• See if the controller needs to have its firmware updated.
• Go to Xbox Settings
• Go to "Kinect & Devices" on the left.
• Select "Devices & Accessories"
• Select your controller.
• Select "Update" (third option)
• It might say "No Update Available", but go ahead and select it anyway just to be sure.
• Follow the on screen instructions.
• See if resetting the button mapping helps with dead zone.
• Navigate to the controller settings again.
• The fifth option should be "Button Mapping"
• Select "Configure"
• Select "Restore Defaults"
Just in case the controller is non-responsive after finishing updating, finding out there are no updates, or it is finished resetting... wait about a minute or two to see if the controller is able to reconnect itself. If not, remove the batteries and put
them back in again.

I know there's no actual dead zone/joystick calibration in the settings (and it'd be nice if there were), but I suppose this is the only available solution we have when it comes to controller issues.

Worst case scenario, you can always send it in for a warranty replacement, or you can return and exchange the whole Xbox system to the retailer.

Hopefully this helps! Report back with results!

Aim Assist?!?!

BF3 and BC2 Aim Assist, when turned off, it totally off. If you play on the PC version, you get on "Aim Assist" if you plug in a controller. Dead Zones calibration and Aim Assist are two different things, people say Dead Zones are
the reason why Xbox needs Aim Assist. Played BF3 Beta with Aim Assist off, and my Dead Zones for Movement and Look were utter crap, yet I still played just fined and kept a SPM of 750+, something that can't be said for the lads even with Aim Assist on.
I never said anything about the Dead Zones on the sticks, I just meant the actual aiming was a lot clumsier. And it's great you do fine with it off, I was just talking in general. And in general console games HAVE to have some sort of aim assist for it to
run well, that's all!

-

Especially for games that don't have a very short kill time like Battlefield and Call of Duty. Halo, Section 8, etc. (Basically any game with kill times longer than a half second) You have to have a lot more precision and that's where controllers fall short.

-

Thanks for explaining though, I see where you're coming from.

Crap, messed up "If you play on the PC version, you
don't get on "Aim Assist" if you plug in a controller." On the majority of PC FPS, there are not Aim Assists.
