    New XBOX One S controller has near-zero bluetooth range


    I bought a new XBOX One S controller. It arrived via FedEx today. After updating the firmware via USB and much trouble trying to pair it with my fully updated Windows 10, I finally discovered that it will pair if it is RIGHT NEXT to the adapter (inches away).
    I tested the adapter with other devices and they worked fine with expected ranges. I tried the controller with another computer and thus different bluetooth hardware and ran into the same issue.

    The brand new XBOX One S controller has a bluetooth range of several inches.

    Anyone encountered this? It is defective right?

    Cannot link my Xbox One Elite Controler via Bluetooth

    The Elite controller does not have Bluetooth.

    Only the new revision of the regular Xbox One controller (released with Xbox One S systems) has a Bluetooth radio built-in.

    So it's not a new xbox one controller, since 2016 with the xbox one s, the xbox controller has the Bluetooth connection. Btw, is your controller official ?

    There is no Bluetooth radio component in the Xbox One S console itself.

    The controllers connect to the Xbox One S the same way the controllers connect to the original Xbox One: proprietary RF. You could technically connect an Xbox One S controller to an original Xbox One, and an original Xbox controller to the Xbox One S.

    The Bluetooth functionality in the new Xbox One S controller is specifically made for connecting the controller to a Windows 10 PC with the "Anniversary" update, which has the drivers needed for the controller when connected via Bluetooth.
