New Xbox One doesn't reboot after initial update download.

A very frustrating thing for a brand new Xbox One!

The Xbox downloads its initial update and then reboots but the screen never comes back on after that. Doing a power cycle restarts the process all over but with the same result.

Now I have years of experience working with PCs and my ears are telling me that the hard drive is having seek problems because if I listen carefully I can hear the tell tale sound that a hard drive makes when it can't read a sector or sectors. Does anyone
know of known quality issues with the hard drives in these things?

As it's brand new I have a replacement on its way to me thanks to very good customer service from the retailer.

Possible solution for those who are still stuck. Follow the Offline Update Steps. This worked for me on a brand new xbox one s that couldn't get past the initial set-up update. My original xbox one reverted back after about 8 reboots. Both xbox' now are
running the 10.0.15063.2022 build. Checked for updates and there were none. Able to play games, go home, apps, etc. Fixed for now, maybe this can help a few people.

 

Can't create new profile on hand-me-down 360S, can't sign in a profile to save any games

We were given an xbox 360S from a friend who got a new one. Bottom line is we can't save our progress on games we play because we can't sign in to any profile or create one. We can't create or download new profiles or save games to existing profiles already
on console. We've tried deleting them, clearing cache, formatting etc. Tried connecting to xbox live, but after it connects to our wifi it fails to connect to xbox live. It also doesn't seem to update system after we've selected to do so, because when we
turn on the console or reboot it, it still prompts us to update system.

 

Actually if it was a hardware failure the system has ways to register that. it would have registered an E100 or a E205 error. More than likely something happened with the initial update and it didn't install correctly.

If you weren't getting it swapped out already I'd suggest doing the offline update option and see if you can get it to install manually,

Ah, interesting. I did consider that but seeing as it was brand new I thought why should I try to fix something that really ought to be working out of the box, so I went for the "ball back in the retailer's court" solution first.

Cheers for the info though. This was more a kind of "I wonder how many others have had the same issue" sort of post.

 

Well I can tell you this much, you're not the first and it seems to come and go in waves. It seems like up until the last system update and going back to about the february update, that the system up popping up and getting it's update and starting normally.
As of this last system update though it seems to be a lot more hit or miss.
