  1. New xBox live member, made mistake of using full name in gamertag

Hi there, I just got my first xBox, and a 12 month live account, and while I was setting up my account last night I got a little confused and accidentally set up my gamertag as my email/login for xbox live, thinking I was customizing the xBox and not realizing
it would be broadcast to everyone. I just contacted sales and told them about the issue and they told me if I came here to contact the moderators it could be changed without having to incur the $10 charge since it was a simple mistake and also it includes
my full name which it's not supposed to. Instead of what it is, could I change it to UnfunnyDave? It's an old running gag. If you could help me out I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

    Dave

How to change xbox live gamertag?

You can easily change your Xbox LIVE gamertag. If your gamertag was created for you during Xbox LIVE sign-up, you can change the gamertag once for free. Additional Xbox LIVE gamertag changes cost 800 Microsoft Points.

To change your Xbox LIVE gamertag

On your Xbox console, sign in using the Xbox LIVE gamertag that you want to change.

Go to Social, and then select your gamertag.

    Select Change Gamertag.

Note the Price of the change, and do one of the following:

Select Enter New Gamertag. If the gamertag you enter is already taken, you will be prompted to try another gamertag.

Select Get Suggestions to view possible gamertags.

Once you enter or select a new gamertag, select Yes, use this gamertag.

Note Click Add Microsoft Points if you don’t have enough points to complete the purchase.

Once you confirm your new gamertag, the change is reflected across Xbox LIVE. You don’t need to tell your friends that you changed your gamertag — their friends lists will be updated automatically.

Made a mistake creating your gamertag?

If you made a mistake when you created your gamertag and you want to change it, you’ll have to purchase a new gamertag. All gamertag purchases must be made through the dashboard and cost 800 Microsoft Points.

    Hi there,

Unfortunately the support person you spoke with was wrong to direct you to the forums. The moderators don't have the ability to issue free gamertag changes. Most are users just like yourself.

There's nothing in the terms of use/code of conduct that says a user cannot use their name as their gamertag. It's not recommend is all.

Currently you have two options: Stick with the gamertag you have, or change the tag.

You can change the tag by one of two ways - either paying for the name change or create a brand new account. You could then have this account as a 'secondary' account for any friends/family that come over who don't have or want to create an account so they
    don't use your primary account.

You could then see if phone support could assist you in canceling the 12-month gold on this account so you can apply it to the new account.

If they are unable to assist with that, you can turn off auto renew on this account (Go to account.live.com > Services & Subscriptions > Xbox Live > Renews On. Select Cancel.) and make sure it has your console set as it's home console so both accounts can
share the gold and can play all the games purchased on this account without the account being logged in (since nothing can be transferred from one account to another, that includes digital purchases and even Gamerscore). Then you can add gold to the new account
    at any time.

    I hope this helps.
