New NVME 4.0 SSD unable to be formatted on Series X

I just got in a 2 TB Sabrent Rocket NVMe 4.0 SSD w/ matching enclosure to use to store and play my older titles and making moving content around faster. Right from the box to the enclosure, I plugged it in to the series X. It was not being recognized period.

I plugged it into my Surfacebook2, not recognized. I looked up some info on formatting and opened Disk Management for Win 10. I first tried formatting it as GPT (GUID Partition Table) w/ NTFS and its full allocation of 2 TB (1.8 TB) and all defaults. My pc recognized the SSD and so I tried w/ the series X again. While it didn't automatically recognize it, in the settings, it was seen, but as a non-games/apps storage for music, pics, etc.

I then switched the partitioning scheme to MBR (Master Boot Record) by fully deleting the partition , switching it via command prompt's diskpart and some instructions that allowed the disc manager to see it as cleared again. I then chose MBR and NTFS w/ defaults. It was seen again by my pc and again I tried on the series X. Again it did not automatically recognize it and settings still saw it as a storage drive pics and non-gaming media.

For those who've setup NVME SSD's on their Xbox's, what steps did you take w/ it fresh out of the box? Did you even format it with windows first? I also made sure to update the drivers on the SSD via the Sabrent site. Reading the points on the Xbox, it looks like the drive being NTFS is the issue, but I'm not sure if making it exFAT or just cleaning it out completely again should work?

    :)

New NVME 4.0 SSD unable to be formatted on Series X

Appreciate the info. Could you provide a link to the Amazon reviews you found please? Trying to figure out if the cable I'm using could also be the issue before returning this SSD and enclosure back.

No as exfat isn't supported.by xbox

Fyi I looked at multiple listings of nvme.kinda a waste case you are still limited to.the usb 3.1 host controller

But it seems they are limited to ps4 and Android and pcs or Macs

With confirmed.compatibility issues with xbox one and series x

    Without knowing your exact controller

This ibased on multiple.reviews on amazon.CA with various controllers

P50 WD Black Problem XBOX series X

I am also using a WD Black P50 (NVMe SSD 2TB) with my Xbox Series X and It works just great on last generation games. Make sure to plug the drive into your Xbox Series X and then format the SSD drive for games (you also have the option to format it for media). The drive must be formatted using your Xbox Series X (NOT a PC). Happy gaming .

    USB adapter+ssd drive+xbox's usb 3.0 port = confirm speeds

For series x there is an nvme adapter/enclosure to usb 3.1 it should be able to match/exceed the internal storage and expansion though right? With the right nvme ofc
It can't match it for speed. The SSD in the console (the internal drive) is likely connected directly into the motherboard. The expansion card slot is a PCIE 4.0 connector. PCIE 4.0 far exceeds anything USB 3.1 gen 1 or gen 2 can achieve bandwidth wise.

    Formatting Samsung T7 SSD

Thank you Jesse, I believe you've helped me before regarding my new baby.

I was kind of confused, I thought all drives HDD, SSD or nvme came blank so that the new owner could format it to the system they'd be using it on.

I was also a bit stunned to read that if formatting a drive for the X series X , that the data wouldn't be transferable to PC.

    Thanx again
