New GamerTag Won't Display Ingame

I changed my gamertag about 4 months ago maybe? After picking up a couple of games on the microsoft store (PC), my previous one was from when I was 8 and had an xbox 360. The issue I'm having is that when I changed my Gamer Tag, it was available and I claimed it. But it won't actually update ingame. If I go to my profile on the website, it displays my old name, if I click "Customize" then click "Change Gamertag", it'll take me to the change gamer tag page, but it displays my NEW one there and I'm unable to type the same thing in again and use it. I have absolutely 0 idea why it won't update.

I see, sorry to hear that. Was the chat support not able to help you with the name change?

I got it sorted.... kind of. Basically, I spoke to someone on a live chat and they told me it's not displaying because I have " 凰 " in my name. However, with the new changes it was my understanding I'd be able to use any name and have it display. Now I'm left WITHOUT my free name change and being forced to pay when I had no warning whatsoever that this name wouldn't display. Which is a bit unfair in my opinion.

You can check our Xbox Gamertag FAQ which mentions:

If your gamertag uses Latin-based characters, it will show the Latin alphabet equivalent (ö will appear as o, for example). If your gamertag uses non-Latin-based characters, your previous gamertag will continue to appear for older, classic experiences, such as some games and Xbox websites, while your new gamertag will appear on modern experiences, such as your Xbox console and the Xbox apps for PC and mobile.

In the case where there are differences between your modern and classic gamertag, you may see both gamertags on some profile pages so you can see how you’ll appear on both systems. New players who don’t have a previous gamertag on the classic system are given the option to customize how their classic gamertag appears in older experiences when making a paid change to their gamertag (the first change is free).

You can also give feedback by pressing Win+F on your PC and choose between "Problem" or "Suggestion" to suggest a stronger / more noticeable warning for changing your gamertag.

As soon as pointed out that the fact I have to now pay for a name change when I wasn't warned my free one wouldn't be displayed and how in my opinion that wasn't fair, she just ended the chat.

Sorry to hear you are having issues seeing changes in your Gamertag. What game are you seeing this happen in?

Do you see the correct Gamertag when you're logged in to https://account.xbox.com ?

If not, make sure you are logged in to the correct Microsoft Account.
