    So most recently, they introduced the Gamertag with the 4 digit ID numbers. My Gamertag remained the same since 2012. Does this mean I am required to change it at one point?

    No. You can keep the tag you have. If you do change it, then it will have the numbers at the end. The

    FAQ     has more details.

    as everyone also stated the asnwer is no.

    Probably in a not so distant future we will be forced to change the gamertag to uniform with this new type. This because it helps connect xbox and pc gamers, with a unique ID

    No you get to keep your gamertag but if you change it in the future it will only have the numbers at the end if someone else also has the same name but if you're the first then it won't have it but the other person will have the numbers at the end showing
    they aren't the first to have the gamertag

    You do not, I recommend not changing it if you always want to keep the original
