New Experience - Gestures removed...... erm..... why????

After about 2 hours trying to get the Kinect to recognise my hand so I could swipe my way through the new dashboard and try the 'New Experience' in a motion fashion I finally called Customer services only to be told 'We have removed that option from your
    Xbox Experience'.

    WHY?????

Wasn't the whole point of the Xbox One to give you this integrated Kinect experience with voice and motion working in harmony with your controller???

So... no motion capability with a new dashboard, that to me is... well... basically the same as the last one... only vertical!

... and along with my newly 'juddering TV live feed' (yep... another gem that landed with the new update).... I'm starting to think to myself.... 'why exactly do I own an Xbox'?

... and to that... right now I have no answer :0[

    :)

New Experience - Gestures removed...... erm..... why????

Because no one or hardly anyone, was using gestures to navigate the dashboard.

I have the Xbox 1 Day 1 Edition console with Kinect. And I can honestly say, I only used gesturing for a few seconds once or twice.... and that was it! Using the controller, or Voice Commands, has become the norm.

Well at least they didn't take away Voice Commands. But to be honest, the new UI which is Windows 10 like, is at least 2x faster than that previous Windows 8 hunk a UI. Microsoft has listened to feedback. And it has resulted in a FASTER and USER FRIENDLIER
    UI.

I remember what Xbox 1's UI was like at launch. It took 30 seconds just to open up Messages. Now it only takes approximately 1 second.

I'd say it was hardly used. By the time it would properly recognize what you were doing you could have had it finished with the controller or voice commands. I'm sure that taking away the gestures helped it in other areas or else they wouldn't have just
    removed it.

They were gimmicky at best. Fun to show off but not at all practical.

  9. I'd say "not at all practical" at the least.

I never used it at all... and if fact, it was so quirky and unreliable, I'm glad they got rid of it.

Half the time, mine would register my hand when I leaned up to get something from the coffee table. Then it wouldn't 'unlock' from my hand when I leaned back and I'd have this stupid hand dancing all over the screen... while I was there doing everything
from making a fist to hiding my hand behind my back to get it to stop tracking, all while trying to keep it from accidentally selecting something I didn't want.

Once it even registered my dog as my 'hand' when it jumped up on my lap. I'm not even a big person... my hand in no way, shape, or form, even remotely resembles a 25lb Boston Terrier.

You hopefully own the console to play games and as far as the gestures I could never get them to work anyway

Ultimately, it frees up memory/CPU resources, which should, in theory, make the UI faster.

I don't care how little it was used. It is STUPID to remove a feature and call something an "upgrade". This is why I HATE Windows 10. It got rid of a LOT of features I love about Windows 8. As for the Xbox, we do NOT play ANY games on ours. We would
NEVER have thrown away $500 on ours if it weren't for the fact that, at the time we bought it, the fact that it gave us great media center capabilities AND both voice and gesture controls. We use gestures all the time and it is he preferred method to manipulate
everything. Stupid companies like Netflix resist supporting gesture control, which is why I berate them frequently in social media. Going with exclusively voice control for the Xbox is NOT good when it's 1am and I want to manipulate the Xbox quietly. And
don't give me "use the controller" garbage. I HATE CONTROLLERS. This is why we do not game on the thing. PC gaming is the only way to play, as far as I'm concerned. This just angers me that Microsoft keeps starting with something great and then turns it
into garbage. At this point, we feel we have completely wasted $500. There really is no reason for us to hold on to our Xbox. Most of the apps we use are also available on our new TV, and we have Dish Network. So, regressing the Xbox into a mere gaming
console and de-emphasizing the media control aspects makes the Xbox into something with very little value-added and it just takes up space and uses electricity.

  14. I don't care how little it was used. It is STUPID to remove a feature and call something an "upgrade".

Many times, an "upgrade" both adds multiple new features that are in demand and removes some that are not. It's being practical and there's nothing stupid about it, especially
when you consider that the removal of that feature frees up resources that can be used elsewhere... like for gaming... which, BTW is a large part of what the Xbox consoles have been about since the beginning. In fact, the OG Xbox did nothing else.

This is why I HATE Windows 10. It got rid of a LOT of features I love about Windows 8. As for the Xbox, we do NOT play ANY games on ours.

I highly doubt anyone would dispute my saying those that do not play any games on their X1 are a minority. The Xbox 360 evolved and changed to suit the demands of the majority
of users and the X1 is doing the same. That's how the market works.

We would NEVER have thrown away $500 on ours if it weren't for the fact that, at the time we bought it, the fact that it gave us great media center capabilities AND both voice and gesture controls. We use gestures
all the time and it is he preferred method to manipulate everything.

It's been awhile, but I've seen quite a few posts in my time here, saying that the Xbox 360 was easier to deal with as a media center than the X1. Something that may be worth consideration
and certainly more effective than ranting on a forum.

Stupid companies like Netflix resist supporting gesture control, which is why I berate them frequently in social media.

Stupid would be your opinion... and I'm sorry, but frequently berating them would be just petty.

Going with exclusively voice control for the Xbox is NOT good when it's 1am and I want to manipulate the Xbox quietly.

    I agree.

And don't give me "use the controller" garbage. I HATE CONTROLLERS. This is why we do not game on the thing.

That majority thing I mentioned. It still applies...

PC gaming is the only way to play, as far as I'm concerned.

    Good for you?

This just angers me that Microsoft keeps starting with something great and then turns it into garbage.

Nope... not even close. They started something that they thought (or perhaps hoped) would go somewhere, but it didn't. If it had been that 'great', then the use of it, demand for
it and related sales would have reflected that and MS would have followed through. The number of people not using it is to blame for its arrival in the garbage.

At this point, we feel we have completely wasted $500. There really is no reason for us to hold on to our Xbox. Most of the apps we use are also available on our new TV,
and we have Dish Network. So, regressing the Xbox into a mere gaming console and de-emphasizing the media control aspects makes the Xbox into something with very little value-added and it just takes up space and uses electricity.

I disagree that the removal of motion sensing 'regresses' it into a "mere gaming console". There are still plenty of things it does aside from gaming. It just doesn't do them via
motion control now. You could always do a google search for an Xbox One media remote... as long as using a remote isn't too much like having to use a 'controller' you hate so much.

I found gesture controls fun! And by fun I mean putting on a little tech demo for the older generation that were blown away by such advances in technology; aside from that, they were cumbersome and not very useful.

Voice controls are another matter for me, as they a very useful for navigation. I turned off my Kinect during the preview for the NXOE and will admit "getting around" is a lot easier than the original dash. Still prefer voice.

    Peace, J.R.
