Never used free gamertag change, XBox for Win 10 says I did

I bought Forza Horizon 3 (WOW, btw) this weekend and used Xbox for Windows 10 for the first time ever yesterday. It gave me the name .

Nothing against fancy young bovines, but it doesn't really speak to me.

So, I try to change it and I read I get a free gamertag change. Great! But when I try to redeem it on the web site, it tells me I owe $9.99. Cancel out of that, do some searches, and find I could do it through the XBox for Windows 10 application, but it
tells me I've already used my free name change.

Seeing as how it gave me randomly because I didn't have a gamertag, I don't understand how I could have used my name change already.

What did I miss? Is there any chance of getting a free name change? Do I have to live out the rest of my Forza career evoking the image of a cow in a tux?

I've had an xbox live account since the 360 era and I recently started using it again for Killer Instinct on PC.

It says that I already used my free gamertag change even though I never used a gamertag change???

Some help would be great.

So i think i got my gamertag from using my skype account, when i signed up for an microsoft acc. My Problem is, that i wanted to change it and then it says "You used your free name change" (german client). But i am 100% sure i never did that, because i never
used this account before.

I have the same problem with xbox gamertag change on windows 10.

I never used mine, but still it wil cost me 9,99 euro's.

It definitely seems that your Gamertag FancyCalf549443 is system generated as if you just created the account. Since it's forcing you to pay, I would recommend you chat with Xbox Billing Support as they can verify and check your billing history to verify
if it has been charged in the past for a name change. You may chat with them here:

It seems that your Gamertag does not look to be system generated, and may have already been changed in the past. However, to verify, I would suggest you do the steps I provided above.

 

A support rep helped me figure out what happened. I apparently got a random name a long time ago, changed it, and the support team thought my new name was offensive, and switched it to my current one.

I will remain FancyCalf, and be humbled.

 

They did the same to me. Forced me a random name then try to steal 10$ from me in order to chose a name they dont deem offensive. I think its a dishonest and unfair microsoft practice. They know you ll want to change the stupid generated name forced on you.
Its called stealing from customers. Shame on you bill.

Bill doesn't work for Microsoft anymore since 2008. Since that time Microsoft was run by Steve Ballmer, and now currently Satya Nadella.

But on to your issue: Your Gamertag was deemed offensive, and therefore you got a forced name change for free.

To prevent people from making an offensive name again (because if it were free, you just would, as it won't hurt your wallet), it would just cause the Enforcement team unnecessary work to force change it again.

By making a Gamertag change cost 10 bucks, you will think twice about choosing an offensive Gamertag for whatever reason, since you know that an offensive Gamertag will just be renamed to something random.

So think well about a non offensive Gamertag, and if that name is worth 10 bucks, then get it.

The Terms of Use and Code of Conduct which has the rules for Gamertags was shown to you when you signed up for Live, and you accepted these rules.

So it's like saying "The police wants to steal 10 bucks from me because I was caught speeding".

The police and Xbox are not stealing the money from you.

You broke rules, and you got a free Gamertag change to a Gamertag that doesn't break the rules. So Microsoft actually GIFTED you a free name change.

If you want a Gamertag of your choice now, you have to pay 10 Dollars, and think twice about choosing an offensive name again, as this would waste your 10 bucks.
