Networking/ hardware question

So recently I've been charged extra from my ISP because I have gone over their data limit (300GB). I have narrowed my problem down to my Xbox as each month it uses 200 to 300 GB. I am a student and I know that I don't get to play often enough to use anywhere
close to that. I have tried both of the "power off" options inside of the box but still had the same result on both of them. It keeps downloading in the background no matter what. I've started to unplug it to make sure it is OFF. Is this causing any harm to
my Xbox? Also as a side note is there a way to turn down the video quality for YouTube videos? I can't find anything for that online.

Thanks for the reply. On face value it should be switched off, but there are scenarios on other devices where just because it's wired doesnt necessarily switch off the wifi network. I wish microsoft could clearly state what it's network is doing on the X.
I read eveywhere I could and like yourself, still dont have a clear answer to something so simple.

Previously when I was playing around with spectrum analysis at home, nothing came from the XB1 that would indicate it's broadcasting anything.

 

First answer is, if you unplug your console will it cause any harm: answer is no, as long as you completely power it down first(not in standby/instant-on mode). And if it is in power "saving mode" it will not automatically download things in the background.
Also there is no way you can change youtube video streaming quality, it automatically defaults for the best possible with your connection.

 

Thanks. As for the background downloading the data used by my Xbox is now a fourth of what it was now that I unplug it every time after use. Maybe I have a weird Xbox.
