Netflix 4K Streaming

So whats the deal ? No 4k streaming for the Netflix app ?

4k streaming on Amazon video?

I am very confused as I thought the latest update to Amazon added 4k streaming. Been trying to watch grand tour in 4k but it's only streaming at 1080p. Netflix works great for 4k. What's going on? Is it something like Netflix where I need to go to the Amazon
website and set something up for 4k streaming?

4K content for streaming over Netflix is only available for Smart TV's, not consoles.

 

Wow, I didn't realize that it stated that on the app page. Shocking..this needs to be addressed and fixed ASAP. I wonder if people starting tweeting at Netflix and Microsoft if things would move quicker

I just asked this on the Xbox Support Live Chat, because I too was curious. So the following info is what I got from a support person under the alias "Romeo O.".

• If you are based in the US, the Netflix 4K update is live.
• If you are based in AUS, where I am from, the update hasn't been rolled out yet.
  

From the digging I did, the support seems to have been around since update 6.2.12998.0 (05 Jun 2015) when they updated the HVEC platform. It was either activated at that time or when the "New Xbox Experience" update rolled out.

Now unfortunately, Netflix streams will start at their worst quality and increase when it detects you have enough bandwidth. So 4K streaming should be possible if you have a 25Mb/s
uninterrupted connection available to just your Xbox. As long as whatever Netflix show you are watching is 4K, it should work when you have the right connection.

For the best reliability, the Xbox should be connected to the internet via a wired network. Wireless is possible with considerations. It is recommended that you use a 5GHz (a/n/ac) WiFi Network, as you are less likely to get interference from other sources
which will make Netflix choose FHD streaming instead. If you were using conventional 2.4GHz (b/g/n) WiFi, it will likely have many phones, tablets and computers already connected. In both cases, the distance between the access point and Xbox will play a role.

Trust me when I tell you that my xbox has plenty of bandwidth for 4k streaming. Netflix will not stream 4k in the app unless the movie is actually marked for 4K. The app only displays HD as the option, not 4K like it does on any other device that I have
that supports 4k streaming. I do notice the difference when streaming Breaking Bad (which is a 4k serious on Netflix) on my xbox one via Netflix vs streaming it from the Netflix app on my smart 4k tv. The 4k TV smart app shows the correct 4k option on the
show and the picture quality is wayyy better then on the xbox Netflix app.

 

I would really like to hear from someone on here that is actually getting the 4k option showing up in the Netflix app on the xbox one. Otherwise I don't believe it is working. And if that is the case, I would almost suspect that this issue would fall under
false advertising either on Netflix or MS.

Currently, only select brands of TV's support 4K streaming, because only a few TV's have the required software. Although we definitely plan to increase the number of devices compatible in the future so the Xbox is not out of the question.
