Sad to say, as I've been through this, usually when this happens it's because the progress wasn't saved to the cloud.

If possible, try accessing a different console, (eg visiting a friend or neighbor with an Xbox One) and signing in with your account. If the game downloads your save game intact, you can recover it.

If the console hasn't deleted the game from the cloud yet, you can go to My Games and Apps, move to the game tile, and press the Menu button.

Choose to manage the game, and there delete the local save game copy.

If you then start the game, it'll download the save state from the cloud, similar to when you visited your friend/neighbour.

If the save game however is gone in the cloud as well, then there is currently no way to get it back again.

Does this happen only when playing Elden Ring?

Check for any updates on your console, also, try to reinstall the game.

It's not normal for your console to behave like that. I do have a Series X myself, and also played Elden Ring, not for too long, but in my case, it ran smoothly.

I do advise that if this keeps happening, you try to send it back to the warranty.
