Neither download nor disk will play on xbox 360

Hello, I have an xbox 360 E 4gb.

Purchased Ninja Gaiden Black for download and discovered I needed more GB.

Purchased 120g hard drive and tried repeated downloads but game simply would not open( other games like Halo 3 etc. work fine). Finally received disk version of game but continue to get same error message as though I were trying to play download version.

Would greatly appreciate a solution!

This was a non-microsoft hard drive purchased through amazon. so my only option would be to purchase an "official" hard drive?

Right. That's the only way backwards compatible games will work on a 360. The 4gb your console came with is considered internal flash memory and not a hard drive which is why it doesn't work with that.

The error message reads: "the game couldn't start. Try downloading the game again." I have down so at least 10 times...

Thank you for posting here on the Xbox forums. To start off, you will need an official Xbox 360 hard drive to play Backwards compatible titles on the 360.

Can you confirm that there is no corrupt data in the Ninja Gaiden folder or any folder in your storage :

How to copy, move, or delete saved games, profiles, and avatar items on Xbox 360

You can identify corrupted data by the Exclamation symbol next to the files.

Aside from that, can you let us know the exact error message you are receiving?
