    Needing new hard drive...

    Hi all,

    Following my
    previous (unanswered) post
, I went ahead last night and tried to revive my dying 250gb Hard-drive (Xbox 360 standard). I transferred as much stuff as I could to an external USB hard-drive - I was unable to transfer a few items, including a couple of downloaded
games, such as Halo 3 and Minecraft. I then, with some trepidation, formatted the Xbox hard-drive. This took about 15 minutes, about 10 minutes of which was spent on a loading bar, 100% full, but still with the caption 'Formatting device. Please do not
    turn off your console.
' This eventually finished. On going back into Storage menu, HDD was indeed blank.

So then I rebooted the console (start-up time still very slow), and immediately tried to copy stuff back onto the HDD. After 2 minutes of 'transferring', there was a pop-up saying 'An error occurred. Some items could not be transferred.', followed
by '0 of 244 items transferred successfully.' Puzzled, I went back to the
Storage menu, to find that the HDD was now shown without a name, and as 'unformatted'. I tried to format again - on completion 10 minutes later, HDD still showed as unformatted. As I was on the verge of throwing the whole lot through the window,
I turned it off and went to bed.

This morning I first tried booting the console without the hard-drive: as I had expected, it loaded up immediately, so definitely a HDD problem. I turned it off, re-inserted HDD, turned it back on... it stuck on the screen with the Xbox logo (which was still
moving/shimmering, as if it were loading) for 10 minutes before I decided enough was enough and turned it off again.

So basically the HDD is dead. Unless any of you guys know otherwise... I'm sure I could cope with that if I was able to find a replacement drive. I can't find a single official Microsoft hard-drive for the standard Xbox 360, be it 60GB,
120GB, or my desired 250GB. I have seen the warnings/scare-stories about unofficial hardware, and I am less than inclined to waste my money on something that won't work. So, to my questions:

    1) Is there anything I can do with my old HDD?

    2) If not, can anyone tell me where I can get a new one?

Sorry if I ramble somewhat, I am perhaps understandably rather frustrated, and I guess this is a (rather civilised) way of releasing some of that frustration.

Thanks for any help or advice,

    :)

    Need More Memory

I only have a 60GB hard drive but I'm needing more space to install games and saved data. Would I be best to try and get a new hard drive, I'm not sure what the clud storage is.

    Any advice would be great.

    Thanks

  6. Registering your console at:
    http://myservice.xbox.com
should give you the option of purchasing a compatible first-party HDD directly from Microsoft.

As far as your data goes as long as it's not showing up with an exclamation point in the storage screen it should still be fine.

Thanks all for your suggestions (particularly Visage) - I have registered my console (surprised I hadn't done it already, actually) and am now able to order a new 250GB hard drive for £120, which I shall do within the next couple of days. Generally feeling
a bit better about technology in general.

    Thanks again,

P.S. My data is still sitting on my USB drive - fingers crossed it will transfer to the new hard drive without issue...

Im having a similar problem... My 250HDD for my Elite just went belly up. I've lost everything since I've never used the cloud before. My console seemed to be running slow so I cleared the cache and then the console could not detect the HDD. Its the one
that came with the console btw ... Oh well I got almost 5 years out of it.

You can always license transfer the important games/DLC that you have bought here is the link to show you how (

    forums.xbox.com/.../46093.aspx
) I suggest buying a HDD from xbox, or Wal-mart, Gamestop etc. not from Ebay or Amazon, one time my friend bought a HDD from Amazon and turns out he spent $120 for 8GB HardDrive,

You could try your local gaming store (ie. EBGames in Canada/GameStop in the US). They sometimes have used hard drive. Another alternative would be a local pawn shop or
http://microsoftstore.com to see if they have one. Other than that, I would definitely try to avoid online retailers such as ebay or amazon.
