Need help playing OG Xbox games on the 360

I got an old Xbox 360 (slim) and a bunch of games from someone. It runs the 360 games well enough. I decided to play Halo since it's been so long since I had played it, and I now have an Xbox to play it on. I even got a hard drive (an official one) for
the 360 to be able to play it. Only problem is, when I try to start the game, a pop-up says "The game couldn't start. Try downloading the game again." Which doesn't make sense off the bat, since it's a disc. I've tried EVERYTHING. I ensured the drive is set
up properly, restarted the console several times, updated the console, cleaned the disc, formatted the drive, removed external USB drives, and I'm still encountering the same error. It isn't the Halo disc either, as the same error shows up with other OG Xbox
games (namely Halo 1 and 2, Simpsons Hit and Run, Sonic Heroes, and Grabbed by the Ghoulies are all the games I tried, to no avail). I'm legit out of ideas. Can anyone help me out a bit here?

Does it happen with your other games? Because they might not support backwards compatibility. (Side Question

Yeah and unfortunately it's harder and harder to find official hard drives these days which makes it even more frustrating. Depending on how recently you bought it, maybe you can return it to Amazon if you want do so and try another one.

I bought it off of Amazon. When looking through the consoles settings, seeing its attached devices, it does have the Microsoft logo next to the hard drive, which made me think it was official. However, I'm looking at the box it came in, and there's actually
no Microsoft logo anywhere on it. So it is entirely possible it's one of those knock-offs. What irritates me is that if I buy a new one, it will be the third hard drive I will have bought. the first one didn't fit whatsoever, and I learned the reason is that
it's for the normal Xbox 360 (how I learned I had a slim), and it's looking like the second doesn't work. I'll have spent about $100 doing this.
