need help, mic not working

I take it that your Sony headphones use a separate, detachable cable for wired audio, assuming it's something like

this model.

The 3.5mm connector on your cable should have four sections (left, right, mic, ground). Review "Standards for audio jacks" on this support page:

Now, I do not know for sure if Sony intended for the microphone signal to be transferred over a 3.5mm cable, so you'll want to review your headphone manual or contact Sony.

Two things to try, Hard restarting your xbox console and updating your controller!

The
controller update believe it or not might be what fixes it, you would think that a new controller would be set, but as a matter of fact it can sit on the self for a time while microsoft pushes out new updates.

Try both of those, if no result
contact microsoft directly!

First check in the guide in "audio" to see if your mic is enabled or disabled. Then see if you need any controller updates or restarting your xbox. If both of these don't work then it's most likely your controller I'm sorry to say. If you still have a warranty
on the controller please contact support to get a new one. (I'll provide a link below)

What headset do you use? Does it connect to the 3.5 mm audio port or do you own a headset adapter?

It's recommended to have a headset with an adapter or find the individual headset adapter and update your controller with a USB cable to your Xbox One and have the headset plugged in at the same time when you update your controller. Even if the controller
is up to date, you can force the firmware update but with the headset plugged in.

Do you get a warning message that a microphone can't be found or is your audio not being heard by others?

Can you check with the following steps if it's a network issue or a setting or a hardware issue:

First, bring up the messaging area in the guide and try to compose a new message. Instead of typing a new message, press the microphone icon and try to record a voice message.

After you recorded your message, listen to the message. Does the Microphone work here?

If so, then certain network settings or maybe an enforcement on your account prevent you from using voice in partychat.

It might also be a temporary issue.

If you are not able to record your voice in a voice message, check the headset on a different controller if possible.

Also make sure the plug is properly seated in the controller connector.
