  1. Naive purchaser experiencing shambles of a service

bought an XBox One second hand yesterday. I saw the seller using it and took it home. I reset it to factory settings as there were a lot of games left on there and a Microsoft account. When it restarted, it says it is a 'Banned Console'.
I spent over 2 hours online with 'Luke' your support person last night and it was a total and utter waste of time. I have my son's birthday tomorrow and am left with a console that will not boot to the home screen to even play games offline.
I am told the resolution to this is to get the person who sold it to sit with me on an online chat and give their XBox Live account details. Do you know how ridiculous this is?! Yes I am naive to this but until yesterday I didn't even know an XBox One
could be a 'banned console'! I am livid about this and there is seemingly nothing that can be done to resolve it as Microsoft won't unban the console. I have tried to find the official complaints process clearly Microsoft don't have one.
I am now left £130 worse off with a console that won't do anything. The seller is saying it worked (as it did) when I picked it up and now I have nothing. I am so angry about this and am left with a very, VERY sour taste about Microsoft products.
I am sure I will be told 'you should have checked the system' etc etc, but as a 33 year old purchasing a console for the first time in 10 years trust me, this never even crossed my mind that a banned console was a 'thing'. Am disgusted

    :)

Let's see what happens when they update all devices to the windows 10 core service, then we can slate them if that turns out a shambles.

You seem to be angry at the wrong people here, it is permanent and cannot be changed, You bought it from someone who knew it was banned If in UK see about taking legal action against them.

  5. Legal action over something that cost £120? My time and a small claims court cost would outweigh it. As I say, 100% naive on my behalf but as seeing it working I would assume it worked (I have no IT geekery about me and took it on face value).

"It is permanent and cannot be changed". Well, it can. It won't, as I am beginning to understand from the painful customer service experience, but it can.

  6. I'm no geek either, you'll have to learn from it as there is no way a ban will be reversed.

  7. Yeah, beginning to get to that point. Just frustrated at the toss way that Microsoft handle the whole issue. All topped off with no email address to raise a complaint - the company that runs Outlook has no email address. Quality.

Sorry you are having these issues but you are angry at the wrong people. Why do you want to complain to Microsoft. They didn't sell you a bad product. That is like buying a used automobile from an individual and you failing to check the air conditioner
and when it gets hot outside you turn it on and it doesn't work then you want the auto manufacturer to make it right.

  9. Well taking that analogy further, if your car manufacturer had the solution to the problem that would cost them nothing to implement but refused and closed all channels of communication to you, then you would get annoyed.

The thing is going in the bin along with my thoughts on Microsoft as a service & product provider

  10. Sorry for your inconvenience, but console bans are only done for egregious violations of the Code of Conduct - that means the previous owner did something huge (like hacking the system or stealing other's accounts) that caused Microsoft to take that action.
Once the ban is in place, it will never be removed.

I'd say go back to the seller and try to get your money back... That's the best you can do. It's always recommended to buy the console new, as you can then be sure it isn't banned and won't be banned in the future due to actions taken by a previous owner.

It seems to me that someone who spent that kind of money on a gift, got caught in an understandably frustrating situation, and then was given a plausible solution, would want to hop on that opportunity. You have to understand the plight of the enforcement
division here. A console ban is reserved only for the most egregious of slights, and you calling in with account details to a brand new and unproven account only makes them more skeptical, you have to understand that they don't know you from Adam. You could
very well be the one who caused the slight (not that I'm saying you are), and they have no way of knowing that.

If your time is so valuable as to not use your opportunity to take legal action, it would seem to me that you made a rash decision in buying something used that you had no understanding of when you should have just bought a new one. You're situation is
grim and I feel for you, but not all the blame should be laid at the feet of the manufacturer and the con man that sold you the console. You choose to walk in to a situation uninformed. Taking ten seconds out of your day to do a Google search along the lines
of, "dangers of buying a used gaming console", will net you thousands of results saying to make the investment for your blood pressure and sanity and just spend the little bit extra and buy a new one.

Chalk it up as a learning experience and move on.

  12. Think I've been quite clear here that yes, I am of course naive to all of this. I appreciate there can be a skepticalness to it too - however from a naive perspective if the situation allows for Microsoft to ban a console based on, presumably, IP and username
then they could check the setup of these things?

Sadly it's a situation that I have lost all faith in Microsoft as a business, will sack the whole thing off and start again with a playstation after some reasonable investigation of the risks.

As for some patronising guff re checking online, last time I bought a console it was a Sega and no such risks existed. The thing is in the bin, so Cheers for your really useful views of where I should express my anger.

They don't ban the console using the IP address &/or username thus being the reason you can use it on your network. You can put Microsoft down and move to Sony that is your choice, however, none of that changes the facts. We understand your frustration
and wish there was something that could be done but unfortunately due to the apparent seriousness of the ban for that console it will no longer be allowed online. Good Luck on whatever yo decide to do.
