Does he have an active Xbox Live Gold subscription on his account? That is required to play online with friends but I'm not sure if that is required to create a player on 2K. I assume you'd need to at least be connected to the internet to back up the
player data to the cloud storage.

Go ahead and check to make sure the account he is using has Gold by going into the Account settings and then Subscriptions.

You don't have to have xbox live gold to make a myplayer account or character. To play online yes, but not to make the account. All you need is an emai address and a birthday. I don't know if there is an age limit. You just enter the email address,
put in a birthday, check your email and click on the link in the message from nba 2k. Then it takes you to a page that says your account has been verified.

Would you know how you would sync 2k to the cloud?

When you reinstall it, check it there is any other save file on the cloud, maybe you can restore it when you boot up the game

When you reinstall it, try to see if you can sync it with any cloud saves and if it finds a backup of your save data. Good luck!
