My Xbox turns itself on...

...and I don't have my kinect plugged in (its still in the box the xone came in). Last night it turned on by itself, and luckily my fiance turned it off when he went to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I have a dust cover and I don't know how long
it was on for before he turned it off, which worries me. It literally just did it now as I am here on the computer. It's switching on by itself with no kinect plugged in and nothing leaning against it or the controller or anything? Whats happening and how
can I stop it?

I have same problem, in Brazil, it's now 4:25 AM, I woke up and my console was on, it's the third time that this happens. I have the build insider, I'll try to uninstall to see!

Hey mate,

Sorry to hear about that!!

What I would firstly reccomend trying is a hard boot of the console. To do this you simply need to have the console on, then hold the power button on the front of the console down for 10seconds until the console switches off. Leave it off for a minute or
two, then switch it back on and it should take you to the green xbox screen before signing you in. This shows it was done correctly. Hope that should fix the issue.

Also, its worth trying to plug your console directly into the power outlet in the wall, as I have heard that surge protectors can cause this issue also.

Another full proof way is to turn the instant on feature off. It could be that the system is downloading updates in the background or something like that which is causing it to switch on automatically. Which you can do through the settings menu

I had the automatic updates enabled. I thought it would behave like a PC, automatically checking for updates as a background process, not like a scary sentient robot, waking up on its own to check with the overlord's update system!

Anyway, I disabled both system and games auto updates when I read your answer, and so far so good. It's been 3 weeks without turning itself on, so it seems it solved the problem. Thank you!

I had this problem with the the XBOX360 S - just cleaned it with a cloth and it worked

Others have reported this in the past and the consensus was that it is related to updates...the system will wake at a certain time to check for updates or to download them. Not sure if there is someway to stop it besides turning the power off at the wall
