    My Xbox S won't stay on.


    I bought an xbox one s in August or September. I don't play it all the time, but once and while I'll turn it on and watch a movie or play Halo and/or Skyrim or something. The last time it was used was probably right after Skyrim was re-released for the next
    gen consoles. I had no problems back then. But today, I turned it on and watched a movie. Then--all of a sudden, it started turning itself off for no reason. I can have amazon prime running for about five minutes before it turns off. But if I try and start
    a game, it shuts down before reaching the title screen. It won't let me turn it on with the controller either.

    I've tried all of the troubleshooting suggestions. I took it out of the surge protector and put it directly in the wall. I unplugged all the cords and let it sit for about a minute. I unplugged the cord itself from the console and the wall so that the system
    could reset itself. I've tried turning off my PS4, so that it was the only thing on besides the tv. It won't stay on for more than a minute or two. I'm not sure if the fan is even running because it seems quieter than i remember.

    What do I do?

    Does anyone have any idea on what to do? I tired looking elsewhere to see if it was something simple that I could fix, but no one else seems to have this problem.

    It could be down to over heating? it does sound like the xbox is over heating then shutting down because of it, very same as a computer would do. I'd suggest to keep an eye out when switching the xbox on and feel around to see if its really hot, if's thats
    the case you'll need to either send away for a repair or replace the part yourself, good luck

    As stated by hailofbulletz try leaving it unplugged for at least 30 seconds and see if this makes any difference.

    I am sorry to hear about your trouble. There could be several issues at play. One could be that it is overheating and needs cleaned, could be a faulty power cord, etc. I see that you tried swapping cords but had left it unplugged for 10 seconds. The One
    S and One X models have built in surge protectors, where as the original Xbox One has one in its brick. Microsoft recommends leaving the cord unplugged from the console for at least 30 seconds I believe (but I would just leave the cord unplugged from both
    the wall and console for a few minutes myself) as well as say to not use a surge protector with these 2 models as it does not allow the console to power up fully. If the system is overheating, Microsoft says to leave it unplugged and let cool for an hour before
    turning it back on.

    As far as cleaning your console, avoid opening your console up as you could damage it should you try. This guide is the best you can do with cleaning it. The guide is for the original Xbox one model but still holds true to the other models.

    There could be other issues at play instead but these are the easiest to trouble shoot first, Other things could be at play that I would not be able to help with such as CPU needing new thermal paste, etc but the more technical hardware issues needs diagnosed
    by Microsoft.

    Are you getting any messages on your screen when you turn it on before it shuts off?

    Sorry to hear that didn't work, at this point I would reach out to microsoft and see if they have any other ideas to troubleshoot withor may say it needs physically repaired. Are you getting any messages at all before it shuts down?

    Did you try cleaning out the ventilation with canned air as overheating will cause it to shut down to attempt to save it from getting damaged. I myself blow it out with canned air, then use the hose from a vacuum to try and struck out any lose dust that
    the air did not get. The vacuum bit Microsoft does not ever mention, that's just me doing what I can short of opening the console up to keep the ventilation clear.
