My Xbox One may have destroyed two HDDs in a row

Hello, I really need some help with my issue...

Last weekend, I was playing Battlefield 1 (which was installed on a HDD plugged in a USB 3.0 enclosure) and suddenly after 1 hour of playing, the game closed. A few seconds later, the notification for plugging the
HDD in pops up. So I start the game again, 10 minutes later, same thing happens. I restart it once more, and immediately, the same thing happens. Again. I tried plugging it in all the ports of the console, it never shows the notification for
plugging it in. Until some point where it was detected as a new unformatted
    HDD
. I tried formatting it, but it went stuck in a loop. It never achieved the formatting. After selecting the settings for the formatting process, I tried to go back to Home waiting for it to be done, but not a single app could launch (timeout everytime
for every app except "Games & Apps").

I had a spare SSHD (freshly bought for a computer that crashed definitely after a few) so I put it in the enclosure and format it. Once it was done, I moved Forza Horizon 3 from Internal Storage to External because I thought in the previous
case the Xbox put all of its ressources into trying to access the drive.

Then, I installed Battlefield 1 again, let it download during the night, then played it flawlessly in the morning. Next time I played, same thing as the previous drive occured. It was like it disconnected. And the rest happened exactly as previously. Both
drives are now in the same state at first sight, I'll explain later why it is not really true.

On my way back to my house, a friend took a look at the drives on his laptop but they both were recognized as USB 3.0 devices. Period. They did not show in disk management.

When I was finally back, I plugged them into my PC and they were recognized the same, except the
HDD showed up in diskmgmt.msc and I was asked to initialize it. Which I did. Now I don't remember exactly what the state of the drive was at that time, I'm thinking about
"Not allocated". I have tried quic formatting it in both NTFS and
exFAT to then format it back on the Xbox. Except it never stayed in that state long enough so that I could try to. At most it went to the format loop on the Xbox, never further. I tried to plug it in on every USB port I have (3.0 and 2.0) and nothing
did it. I tried to disable quick formatting but it never completed in hours so I canceled it each time. The only time I got it working was by using
exFAT. And when I tried to move a 1Go video, and the download speed acted weird. Normal, then slowed, went slowly back up then crashed to 0. I had to format it again... It said something weird (it's in french):
"Le délai de temporisation sémaphore a expiré" (I could not find an equivalent to it in english).

I said the second drive was not really the same. Actually, it did not even go to the point of showing up in the disk management because every time I plugged it in, diskmgmt crashed. Every time. Unlike the HDD, WIndows never asked me to format it so that
I could use it. Might it be because it was a hybrid drive?

What I think is weird, samed thing happened to 2 different drives in just 24 hours. One is 5 years old, the other one is brand new). I hope I have given you enough informations after a week of searching, I'm getting tired of it... and I
am seriously thinking about abandoning the console if I can't install any new games...

    A few precisions, I am a preview member (ring 3 I think),

HDD: 750 Go / Hitachi / 5400 rpm (not so sure, it was the one of my 5 years old laptop)

    SSHD: 1To / Seagate / 5400 rpm too

    :)

XBOX Slim continued E68 error, failures

First, you can extend the warranty for two additional full years by calling XBOX Support and asking to have an extended warranty added. The cost is $29.95 for a year and $49.90 for two years, last I checked.

After that, I'd say try explaining the problem a third time to support, then send in both the console and the HDD. It sounds like there's something marginal in the console, or you got two bad HDDs in a row. Either way, convince them to accept the whole package
and send you back a replacement console and HDD.

although, if he "accidentally" dropped his HDD on the floor and destroyed the plastic case, he could just buy himself a replacement case so his HDD will install into his xbox.

    SillyViceKid,

Wow, that's a lot of information. Thank you. But, there are two things that jump out at me. First, you say "I tried to disable quick formatting but it never completed in hours so I canceled...". Does this mean you were never able to do and or complete a
full NTFS format of the drives? And, when you say "I put it in the enclosure...", does this mean you are using the
same USB enclosure for both drives?

Yes, only quick exFAT works and I switch drives when trying to format the drive

Hey SillyViceKid! Since you're in the Insider program, you should post this over

    here
. I would suggest trying a different external hard drive or flash drive to see if the enclosure is causing any issues. Thanks!

I don't have any other drives to test, only the HDDs swapped to external, but I do have a spare SATA cable boxed somewhere in all of my stuff, I'll try and find it and come back to you with some feedback (positive I hope)

I just bought another enclosure, formatting still does not work, the SSHD cannot even be initialized... None of them appear into the Data LifeGuard Diagnostics software. That console really did kill 1.750 Go worth of hard drive...

EDIT: the HDD shows up in DLGDIAG and the smart status shows to be good (it says PASS). But formatting still fails...

The HDD eventually started to work with the Xbox, I could install Need for Speed and the Master Chief Collection but Skate 3 and Battlefield 1 get stuck even though my network is fine. Any suggestions?

Hey SillyViceKid! Can you try installing them to the internal drive? Additionally, can you post your

    detailed network statistics
and NAT so we can take a look? Thanks!

I had to unplug the external drive to be able to install it on the internal, otherwise it wouldn't let me and get stuck at about 1/4 of the download. Once plugged back in, it would show that the latest game I tried to install on it (Skate 3) is installed
on both drives, even when I chose to move it from the internal to the external.

Hey SillyViceKid! With the external disconnected does the game install and launch? If so, the external hard drive may have an issue. Post back and let me know!

Yes, hey do, but the drives are not in cause since both of them were working, the HDD worked for more than a month and the SSHD was working fine before using it for the Xbox One. The enclosure is not defective either, the one I'm using is brand new and severla
users seem to use it flawlessly for this use. I don't know why, but when I try to move a game installed on the internal, nothing or really few moves... Once the process started, I can't stop it. Even if I unpmug and plug back, it tries again and freezes in
that position. I thought Need for Speed and the Master Chief Collection were installed correctly since they appeared in the games section, but when starting them, an error message says the starting process was too long... I play all the games currently installed
on the console and won't uninstall any, and since I cannot install any more because the console won't let me, I won't buy any more drives even branded Xbox (that Seagate one) and think I'll simply let the console somewhere and wait for a stable console to
be released. Or eventually never play it again.
